The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 30 - December 3, 1982

 

Tuesday, November 30, 1982 Sent letters to Scotland

 

Another cloudy day, on the mild side. I was busy all day. I done regular work, made a pie, got a soup to going for supper. I worked at desk, in PM I watched TV PM programs. Betty called, she went to town. Kim’s legs looked better. Billie busy all day, out in PM. Bill at his every day stand. Desk, his chair in kitchen, the table. He should get out once in a while. It was cloudy and some rain showers.

 

 

 

Wednesday, December 1, 1982

 

Well, it is quite a day, snow on the ground when we got up then it rained, mild temperature. I washed, ironed washed windows, put up the Christmas window lights. They look very pretty. Billie in and out all day. Bill no, all he does is sit in here and smokes and keeps the windows a mess.

 

 

 

Thursday, December 2, 1982

 

When we got up this morning it was clear, which hasn’t been since last Sunday. The moon shone bright most all night. I been kind of busy, got the supper to going. Betty came up for a minute. Dorothea to Portland and Jeff’s all day or p.m. She took Delores and I to town in a.m.

 

 

 

Friday, December 3, 1982

 

Well it has been a cloudy, showery and dark day but mild. I done up my work and then I went to town and done a few errands. I did a dite of wash. Made out checks for the bills. Got them ready to go. Billie in and out. Betty came up. Kim babysitting tonight. Zak stayed up tonight.
