The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 22 - 24, 1969


Wednesday, October 22, 1969

A miserable sickening day. It snowed hard all day. Got about six or 8 inches of snow. A regular nor’easter. Es called. Then she went down to Betty’s and spent the day. I made a blueberry pie and cooked a boiled dinner. Walt working in Kittery today. Es, Cliff and Fern up for supper. A bad storm. Bill had to go out to work after supper.



Thursday, October 23, 1969 SNOW

22° this morning. Didn’t get up above freezing. A very cloudy and cold windy day. What a mess. About six or 8 inches of darned snow this morning. It was awful windy and cold. I went down and stayed with Zak while Betty went to town to get boots for the kids and do her shopping. Later she had to take Carmen’s boots back and swapped them. Esther and Cliff up to Joy and Buddy’s today. They went there for supper. I washed.



Friday, October 24, 1969 got rest of pork home tonight.

A nice day. I did up my work. Esther came up and spent the day. She took me to town. Fern and Cliff came up for supper. Es made some apple crisp. It was good. After supper we wrapped the pork and packed the salt pork. Bill got $97 this week after working one night to salt and clear the roads of snow. Snow went some today. Carmen all dressed for the bad weather this morning when she went to school. I ironed.

October 19 - 21, 1969 Esther and Cliff arrive for a visit

A beautiful day. I done up my work, washed, ironed. Cleaned all my silver. Had Kim and Zak up here while Betty, Walt and the company went down in the woods. Billie worked for Lawrence again today. They baled and hauled the clover away down to Lawrence. Esther and Cliff leave today for Maine and home. Fern not too good. Fern, Lloyd, Ken and Delores went down and called on Dorothea.



Monday, October 20, 1969 Es and Cliff came at about noon, Pigs Killed

Today at noon Esther and Cliff came. I done up my work, did a small wash. Called at the Horton’s. Betty made me a tuna fish casserole for supper, very good. About noon Esther called, said they would be up a little later. So they came, I had them and Fern stay for supper. Then we went down to the Horton’s. Bill went too. Billie worked at Lawrence’s killing the pigs. 198 and 150 pounds.



Tuesday, October 21, 1969 FERN’S BIRTHDAY

It was cloudy this a.m., wind, clouds. Esther was here early. We talked about Fern’s birthday etc. I done up regular work. Ironed, talked with Betty and Kim and Carmen. I cooked a baked ham supper. Fern, Es and Cliff here for supper. After supper we had a birthday celebration for Fern. Dorothea made the cake. Betty and girls, Dorothea and Jeff, Billie, Bill, Cliff, Es, Bob and Pat, Kennard and Delores, Aunt Ava and me. Had a nice time. Fern got gifts and money. Was very pleased about it all.

October 15 - 18, 1969


Wednesday, October 15, 1969 Kim had measles and polio shot

A beautiful day. I washed windows inside and out. I washed, did an ironing. A dite of cooking. Down to Betty’s for a minute. She took Zak back for his check up. He weighs 9 pounds. Kimmy had a measles shot and polio. After supper I called at Ferns and Aunt Ava’s. Fern didn’t look too good after her bad spell of last night.



Thursday, October 16, 1969 Hair Set

A nice day. I defrosted and cleaned both refrigerators. Kept Zak while Betty went to town to get her groceries. She came back and took me to June’s. I had my hair set. In evening I called at Ferns. She is a little better.



Friday, October 17, 1969

A good day. I cleaned up the whole house all good and thorough. I washed and waxed kitchen floor. I washed, ironed. Kim up here. I went down there a little while. Down town in evening shopping and then called at Betty’s.



Saturday, October 18, 1969 Married 39 years tonight

A very nice day. I did up regular work, baked beans. Went down to Betty’s to stay with the kids while they went to get coats for Carmen and Kim. Got home about 4:30. Betty and Walt gave us $10 to go out for supper, anniversary gift. Bill and I went to a restaurant in Portland. Called at Dorothea’s on way home. Had a good supper. Fern down to Betty’s for supper, also they had company from Rhode Island. Dorothea was glad we called. Dave has got some more paneling done. Billie worked for Lawrence all day.

October 11 - 14, 1969


Saturday, October 11, 1969

A dreary miserable day. Didn’t get up very early. Done up the work. Made ripe cuke pickles, rolls, pie, baked beans. Billie mowed the second (?) of clover at Walt’s and the garden of old weeds. Walt worked all day cleaning it up. Fern up for supper. Billie worked up to Ray McDonald’s mowing for Lawrence. Bill called at Betty’s and watched ballgame in p.m.

Sunday, October 12, 1969 Billie sawed wood

Foggy and cloudy in a.m. Cleared about 11 AM. Did up the work. Billie sawed wood at Chet’s. Lloyd called. Bill fixed his electric razor. Walt still working in the garden.



Monday, October 13, 1969

A cloudy miserable day, on the cool side. I done up my work, went down to Betty’s. We cleaned paint off her windows and washed some. She did a huge ironing. Came home, got supper. After supper Fern, Billie and I went down to Cornish and got butter.



Tuesday, October 14, 1969

A nice mild day. I worked at Betty’s. We did her outside windows, the grain room and she cleaned up her whole house. It looks very clean after it was all done. She went to town for me. Fern had another one of those dizzy spells tonight. She was real bad.

A rainy day. I cleaned my kitchen cupboards. Kim was up today. In evening Billie and I went down to Betty and Walt.



Thursday, October 9, 1969 Kim to Hospital for Heart Check up

A very nice day, up early. Washed. Down to Betty’s,  helped her get ready. We took Kim to Portland for her heart check up. We went to Dorothea’s. I stayed there with the baby while she went to the hospital. Dorothea was glad to see us. We came home on up through Gorham, Rte 114 and up through Sebago. It was very pretty with all the colored leaves. We ran out of gas down on S. High St. They want to check Kim in six months again. Said her heart is enlarging some.



Friday, October 10, 1969

A beautiful day. Done up regular work, washed. Down to Betty’s. I went with her to do some shopping. I did my window sills today. We went to Kings in Falmouth.
