The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 6 - 9, 1968 A New President


Wednesday, November 6, 1968 President Nixon

A nice day. We didn’t get much done today except supper, except for regular housework. Walt came and got Betty and kids tonight. Carmen hasn’t been too bad today. They left for home about 8:30 PM. Today about 10 o’clock it was announced Richard Nixon has been elected president.



Thursday, November 7, 1968 OIL

It began to rain tonight about dark. Today we have had our first oil. I swept, dusted, washed floors and vacuumed. Also defrosted refrigerator. Betty called, Carmen is very sick with asthma. After supper she called, she is in the hospital, in oxygen tent and isolation. I miss Betty and the kids.



Friday, November 8, 1968 First snow, 4 inches, Bill to work at 3:30 AM

This is the first snow of the season. About 4 inches. Bill called to work at 3:30 AM. I worked at Dorothy’s in a.m. It has snowed, rain and wind blowed hard and cold all day.

Billie worked for Lawrence hauling dressing. Bill and I down town. Fern up for supper.

We didn’t get to bed very early last night and Carmen had a bad asthma attack in the night. I baked beans. We did up regular work, I made some bread and rolls.



Sunday, November 3, 1968

A nice sunny day. Billie worked for Lawrence hauling dressing. He hauled some up here. I cooked a boiled dinner. Betty and Walt over to Aunt Ava’s. Dorothea, Dave and Jeff came. All were here for dinner. Carmen had asthma troubles again last night.



Monday, November 4, 1968

A nice day. Betty, Kim, Walt and I all went over and called on Joy and family at Topsham. They have a beautiful home. We had a very nice time. Called at Dorothea’s on the way home. Her house looks so nice. Fern came up and stayed with Carmen. She is having asthma trouble. Carmen was very bad last night with asthma. Couldn’t sleep or lay down.





Tuesday, November 5, 1968

A nice clear day, on the cool side. Betty, Walt and kids here. Today was election day. Walt took me down to vote. Betty and kids stayed here today and Walt went home. Betty and I went down and done washing after supper.

Kind of on the cool side. I cleaned up the house. I did some cooking.



Wednesday, October 30, 1968 Hair Set

A very nice day, no rain. I did my ironing, went over to June’s and got my hair set. I took up my geraniums today. Robert dropped in for a minute.


Thursday, October 31, 1968

Another nice sunny day, very cold and windy. I done up the work, picked over some receipts etc. Pres. Johnson made a speech today. All bombs will cease firing tomorrow at 8 AM. He is in hopes to have it all come to agreeable terms so the war will soon be over. Halloween kids called tonight. Cooked a dite.

Another nice clear day. Still on the cold side. I worked at Dorothy’s. Betty, Walt and kids came tonight. Kids are pleased to get here. Carmen has some asthma.

It rained today but not enough to help the well. I worked at Dorothy’s, got Mrs. Drew’s check. Came home, did my cleaning, went to town after supper.



Saturday, October 26, 1968

Clear and cold. I done up the work, cooked today. In P.m. went to town. I read some are in the BBC book. Lawrence called. Billie went to Berwick and around with him today. Water still very low in the well.



Sunday, October 27, 1968

Back on standard time, it is some better. I done up the work. Bill gone most of forenoon. Billie down to Lawrence’s. Bill and I took a ride up through Sweden. Fern and Lloyd called.



Monday, October 28, 1968

A little cloudy and a sprinkle of water. I went to town with Fern and Lloyd and did the washing. Sent Norma’s wedding gift off today.

October 21 - 24, 1968


Monday, October 21, 1968

Cold and windy, cloudy. I did up my work. Got ready, went to town with Fern and Lloyd and did the washing at laundry. Came home, hunt it out. Cleaned up the house. The clothes blowed awfully on the line, some blew off. Dr. Nash boarded at our house two different times. He was a pleasant person to have around. He died today.



Tuesday, October 22, 1968

Cooler this morning after a very cold and windy day yesterday. It is a little windy today, but clear. Astronauts landed back safe and sound this morning. I cleaned up the house and ironed, cooked today. I washed some of the windows after a small rain shower yesterday. Billie and I called at Dorothea’s after supper.



Wednesday, October 23, 1968

It was cloudy in a.m. it cleared in p.m. I finished reading a book. Done up the work, done some other odds and end jobs. In evening Raymond Gammon and his wife called to see the house. Dr. George P Nash buried today.



Thursday, October 24, 1968

Foggy in early a.m., it cleared off. I done up the work, cooked some, defrosted and cleaned  up the refrigerator on the breezeway. Did some odds and end jobs.
