The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 29 - 31,1973


Sunday, July 29, 1973 Dorothea 36

Today dawned a most beautiful sunny day. We got up about seven, had breakfast. Dorothea and Dave came for a little while. They were on their way to go up to North Stoneham on a picnic for the day with the Hortons and the Ed Babbitts. They had a very good time and the kids enjoyed it very much. We, Bill, George, Betty and I went down to Jack and Sylvia’s. We enjoyed a nice visit with them and looked at some old pictures of Jean’s. Came home, had a cookout steak supper.

Monday, July 30, 1973 HOT AND SUNNY

Up, got the work done early. I did my wash. Betty came and we went to Portland, Zayre’s and the Maine Mall. It looked very pretty. George and Betty enjoyed it very much. Betty treated us to dinner at the Deering Ice Cream Shop. Very good dinner. Came home and George’s slides had come back. Then after supper we went to town and came home and went down to Betty’s and helped she and Walt move hen  coops. Then they came up here and we saw the slides. Carmen and Kim had a good time, they went down to Dawn’s and Sebago Lake swimming. We picked them up when we came home. Zak was with Walt while we were at the Mall. At Walt’s office etc.

Tuesday, July 31, 1973 Carmen up today, grain box

I did some washing. Betty and George down to Sally and Gordon’s. It was cloudy when we got up but it cleared in late a.m. and was a very nice day. Betty got a grain box today from Chet. Kennard and Bill got it down for her. Kennard looks very bad, he is so thin. He can’t eat. He is going to doctors tomorrow. I did a lot of jobs today. Ironed also. Cleaned up the house. Carmen up today.

July 26 - 28, 1973 A New Car for Dorothea and David


Thursday, July 26, 1973

A pretty good day, it got hot and humid. Done up the work, cleaned the house up. Kim up here all day. Betty took Mrs. Osborne to the airport. Fern stayed with Carmen and Zak. I made a pudding, cooked string beans.



Friday, July 27, 1973

Cloudy and showers this morning. I went down to Betty’s. We got ready and went down to Westbrook and she got another cat, black-and-white. Zak went but not Carmen and Kim. Also George, Betty and Bill went too. Came home, went shopping. Then after we got back from town I made custard, brownies and picked greens. Picked string beans for Betty. Got supper. I washed after supper. Billie cleaned lawn mower,  garage etc.

Saturday, July 28, 1973 beautiful day, Dorothea and Dave New Car

This morning we got ready and headed for Northern Western Maine. Billie took us for a nice long ride and out for dinner. We went up by way of Screw Auger Falls which we found very interesting. Then on up to Upton and the mountains to Errol and up to Dixfield Notch and around the Balsam Hotel. Back and had dinner at Errol and then home back through Wilson Mills and stopped on the way to look at the scenery. Came home, had lunch. Es and Cliff called and later Dorothea and Dave in a brand-new car. Oldsmobile. We all took a ride and enjoyed it very much. They were very pleased and we are glad for them.

July 22 - 25, 1973


Sunday, July 22, 1973 HAYING ALL DONE

It dawned fair and clear. I done up the work. Went to town. Came home, made sandwiches. Went down to Walt and Betty’s to eat sandwiches. Hortons, Thomases, Yates, Crooks and the Crook guests. Had a nice supper and had a good time. Today Betty and Walt got there haying all done and in the brand-new barn. Billie, Dave and Bill helped.

Monday, July 23, 1973

Another beautiful day. I done regular work and I did a dite of washing. We got ready and went down to the tenting area to see Gordon and family. Went to Raymond Maine and got the glass for the refrigerators. Came home, got supper, had peas. Esther and Vince called.



Tuesday, July 24, 1973

A very nice day, not too hot. I done regular work, washed a dite. We went up to Evergreen Valley. Came home, had lunch, picked string beans and after supper went down and called on Fern and Lloyd.



Wednesday, July 25, 1973 it got very hot

Today we took a trip up to Telstar. Had a lunch at a very nice restaurant in Rumford. We had car trouble. After we got home Bill, George and Betty went down and got the car fixed.

July 19 - 21, 973 Betty and George Crook Arrive From Scotland


Thursday, July 19, 1973 HOT

It came off hot and clear. I did my dishes, silverware, washed. Ironed, down to Betty’s. We made root beer. Cleaned up the cars tonight. Bill worked at Betty’s. They mowed lawns and Betty did also.



Friday, July 20, 1973 Walt 45 today, $50, MOWED HAY, BETTY AND GEORGE

Today I flew around and finished all my odds and end jobs. Betty very busy too. Went to town. Dorothea and Dave called. Kimmy up here. Bill worked at Betty’s. Got ready and left home at 7:15 PM to go to the airport to meet Betty and George. It has been a hazy day, but very hot and humid. Betty, Bill and I went, we picked up Dorothea, drove to the airport. It thundered and lightning and rained very hard. At 9:45 their plane came in. We was so glad to see them. They were tired. Dorothea came up to stay all night. We got home about 11:15 PM. Talked and had sandwiches etc. Had a good time. Dorothea down to Betty and Walt’s. Today Lawrence mowed Walt’s hay.

Saturday, July 21, 1973

Up kind of early. It was cloudy and foggy. We had a late breakfast. I made bread and a chocolate layer cake. Washed. Got lunch and cooked a turkey. Betty and family, Dorothea and Dave came up. We all had a good time and enjoyed the meal etc. Dorothea enjoyed her visit down to Betty’s and very happy to be here with the family and to get a chance to visit George and Betty. Walt sick but better tonight. All went home late. We enjoyed the slides of Bill and my trip to Scotland.
