The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 11 - 13, 1973 Jean's Funeral

Friday, May 11, 1973 hair set, RAINED HARD ALL DAY

Billie still sick. He had x-rays. He has been very sick today. It has rained so hard all day. I went over and got my hair set. Bill painted floor at Betty’s. They all went out for supper. Carmen gone to a girlfriend’s house tonight.

Saturday, May 12, 1973 JEAN’S FUNERAL, mowed lawns first time

This morning the sun came out. It seems so good to see it after about four days of rain and clouds. Billie felt better but awful weak. He trimmed the grass and Bill mowed some lawns. I done up the housework. Baked beans, made a cake, did a big wash. Went to town, did a dite of shopping. About noon Dorothea’s folks came. We all got ready and went to Jean’s funeral at the Congregational Church at 2 PM. There were quite a lot of people. She had a very pretty casket and looked good. After the funeral we went to Gordon’s house. Came home, Dorothea called to see Betty’s house, it is beautiful. Dorothea likes it so well. They were here for supper. Betty and Zak up after supper. Carmen called on a girlfriend this weekend. Nothing showed up on Billie’s x-rays. Jeff, David, Dorothea, Bill, Betty, Walt and I all went to the funeral.

Sunday, May 13, 1973 finished fencing, Billie better

Partly cloudy, on the cool side today. Billie, Walt and Betty finished their fencing. It is a good one too. Bill finished mowing lawns and worked down cellar. I washed and did all the ironing. I cleaned and done my refrigerator. Fern, Lloyd called in PM. It cleared off good in late p.m. Walt don’t feel too good, he got tired out. Betty had a nice Mother’s Day. Betty and Zak came up and called and brought me $10 for Mother’s Day. Dorothea called. Today Billie feels much better.
