The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 7 - 10, 1974



Thursday, March 7, 1974

I went down to Betty’s. Zak to school. Carmen came home from the hospital. Betty called here and Carmen for a little while. Bill and I to town.



 Friday, March 8, 1974

Carmen home from school to get rested. I washed windows and did some more work on my scraps. A few I collected after I got the rest done.



Saturday, March 9, 1974

It was cloudy when I got up but it cleared away. I did regular work, washed kitchen floor, cooked etc. Carmen up here. Betty, Walt and kids out riding around. Looking for a building. Carmen here for supper.



Sunday, March 10, 1974 got CATTLE

A Cold Windy Day. I done up my work. Changed beds etc. Then I did my hair shampoo and rinse. Lloyd called. Today Billie and Walt got the barn ready at Walt’s and then they got the cattle. Billie got a heifer from Joe McDonald and he and Walt each bought a beef from Lawrence. Billie was so pleased.

March 3 - 6, 1974 Carmen Got Hurt At School

A cloudy snowy day. I done regular work. Cooked a pie, had steak supper. Ironed. Walt and Betty up. They are very enthused about buying the Bean Farm.



Monday, March 4, 1974

Not a very good day. I went down to Betty’s in a.m. She went to the dentist. I stayed with Zak. I helped her in p.m. to get her house cleaned up.



Tuesday, March 5, 1974 58° temp

It was cloudy and showery in a.m. It cleared about 1:30 PM, it became windy. I was down to Betty’s in a.m. went to town with her after Zak. Done a dite of cooking. Betty had company in a.m., Bonnie and Sandy Smith.



Wednesday, March 6, 1974 very mild, Carmen got HURT at school

A beautiful day. I did washing and clothes dried very good. It was very mild and a nice breeze. Marianne called at Betty’s today. She has been in Florida for the past two or three weeks. Today at noon or a little after Betty got a phone call from Mrs. Flint (Carmen’s teacher). Carmen had been hurt quite bad. A car trunk cover came down on her head. She was taken to the NCM Hospital for test etc. She will stay there overnight. I had Zak in PM. After supper Betty and I went down to see her.

February 28 - March 2, 1974

This is been a partly cloudy day. On the mild side. Betty up here and worked on the snapshots. Zak to Humpty Dumpty school then he was here in p.m.



A very unusual month of February this 1974. Not much snow, very mild. We went to Carmen’s birthday party on the fifth. On the 17th the Horton family up here for Betty’s birthday. The will of Jean’s finally came out in the paper on the 26. I sure hope they get that settled soon. Esther and Cliff bought a brand-new car this past month.




Friday, March 1, 1974

A real March day. Sunny and mild. Betty, Zak and I went to Portland to grocery shop. Dorothea went with us. The snow is all gone down by Windham and down. We don’t have too much here at home. Esther and Cliff came over tonight.





Saturday, March 2, 1974

Partly cloudy and partly sunshine, is shown enough so I got my clothes dried and in. I washed windows on the outside. I washed kitchen floor, done a dite of cooking, bread, rolls and a chocolate cake. Carmen stayed down to Maureen’s last night, came home this p.m. Bill and I to town in p.m.

February 24 - 27, 1974


Sunday, February 24, 1974 very cold

A very nice day. Zak went home in middle of forenoon. Billie went with Lawrence looking for cattle. I did all my washing, the clothes dried good. Bill and I went for a short ride. I worked on the jigsaw puzzle. Kids had colds this weekend.



Monday, February 25, 1974

It has been a very nice day. I went down to Betty’s in a.m. came home and did some washing. Also worked on the puzzle. Watched TV programs.



Tuesday, February 26, 1974 JEAN’S WILL

Another beautiful day, on the cool side. I went down to Betty’s in a.m. She came up here, we looked at some papers, pictures etc. Today the will of Jean’s came out in the paper after she has been dead nine months 18 days. We are glad that is done and now will be glad when the whole thing is all settled. It made Bill feel better.



Wednesday, February 27, 1974

A nice sunny day. Kind of raw. We went down to Dawn’s and on down to Dorothea’s. Had lunch there. Came home. I got supper and had it early. Billie stomach bothering him now. Bill has trouble with his eyes. Walt went to school tonight. He is taking a course in real estate this winter. He goes to Cape Elizabeth to school.

February 20 - 23, 1974

A beautiful day. I did a big wash today. Clothes dried good. Kim went home today after being here for overnight. Carmen up here tonight to stay all night. Joy and kids called at Betty’s today. Billie all through work till Monday. M & M Alloy Co, like many others, are slack because of this energy shortage. Caused by the big money sharks of the world.



Thursday, February 21, 1974

Carmen here today. She and Kim went down to skate in a.m. She stayed till after supper. We worked on a puzzleand watched TV. Billie down to Lawrence’s.



Friday, February 22, 1974

It began to snow in middle of forenoon and then turned to rain. It rained quite hard all day. I helped Betty in a.m., then she and I went to town. Today Mike called to see his two girls. Carmen and Kim. He visited with them for a while. Billie still lame.



Saturday, February 23, 1974

Partly cloudy. I done regular work, a dite of cooking. Washed floor. Defrosted refrigerator. Billie worked in forenoon at M & M Alloys, went with Lawrence in p.m. Kay Thomas called, she brought me a ironing board cover. Zak up here and stayed tonight.
