The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 21 - 24, 1966



Sunday, August 21, 1966

Not too warm. Bill down to Fern and Lloyd’s to work. Billie and I picked some corn etc. Billie up to Chet’s. Dorothea had to work all day. I cooked a cake and a chocolate pie. Betty and children came up. Billie went down after them. Dorothea went to Tonie’s funeral this p.m.



Monday, August 22, 1966 Hair Set

A cloudy rainy day. I done up the work. Betty and girls came up. We went to town to the bank. Came home, got ready, over to June’s. I had my hair set. Aunt Ava called in PM. Took Betty and girls home after supper.



Tuesday, August 23, 1966

Cloudy and some showers. We worked up in the shed chamber. Betty and kids up. Dorothea brought home a lot of good cold cuts etc. tonight. Took Betty and girls home after supper.



Wednesday, August 24, 1966

A nice day. I did a very big wash. I took care of all the grandchildren. What a job. Betty down to Mrs. Hansens. Dorothea up in PM with a lot of beans, hot dogs, fruit, bread etc. They had the banquet tonight.

I took care of the children while Betty worked at Mrs. Hansen’s. I went down to Betty’s in evening to babysit till she got home. Dorothea came after us. Jeff went with me.



Thursday, August 18, 1966

A nice day. I did a big wash. Mrs. Dunn called. They don’t want the farm. We was quite disappointed but all happens is for the best. Took Betty and girls home early. Dorothea home in p.m., didn’t have to go back. Tonie Conant died last night.



Friday, August 19, 1966

A nice day. I done up my work. Betty came up. We went to town and over to Norway. Came home, got supper. To town and done my shopping.



Saturday, August 20, 1966

A nice day. I done up regular work, washed kitchen floor. Betty and children up. Aunt Ava called in p.m. Bill worked at Lloyd’s. Betty and children down through the woods to Lloyd and Ferns. Betty down town and got some butter etc. Fern up in evening for supper. She and Bill watch ballgame. Barbara called in evening.

August 13 - 16, 1966



Saturday, August 13, 1966

A nice day. We picked our small cukes for pickles. Billie took them up to Lil’s. She made us some sour pickles. Billie worked at Raymond in a.m. Betty over to Gardiner with Mrs. Hansen to get her son at the YMCA camp. I had the children. Some people came to see the trailer. A nice day. Fern up for supper.



Sunday, August 14, 1966 HOUSE is going

Beautiful day. Jeff down to camp with Dorothea. I got up late. Bill worked in the garden harrowing. Lloyd up. He stayed a long while and talked. Betty brought up the kids, she went back and cleaned her apartment. Bill and I up to trailer. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dunn came to see the house. They say they want to buy it. Kennie and Dot up.



Monday, August 15, 1966

Kind of hazy in a.m. but my clothes dried. Clouded up in PM. Betty worked on her boxes upstairs. Randy Harmon here. Betty gave Jeff a lot of junk, he was so pleased. Mrs. Dunn and children here to see the house. Tonie not at all good, end is near.

Cleaned up the house, did my ironing. Betty and kids up. Kind of cloudy most all day. Dorothea didn’t come up today from camp. Billie late coming home from work. Had his car fixed.

A sunny day, but a strong East wind. I done regular work then Betty came. We washed, got clothes in. Betty did most of the ironing. Betty and children home early again tonight. Kimberly sick today. Carmen better. Dorothea up in PM. Wesley came with her. Bob Hatch called tonight again to ask about the trailer. Tonie Conant better today.



Wednesday, August 10, 1966

Cloudy all day. I picked shell beans. Took care of my grandchildren. Tonie very bad today. Wesley here for afternoon and evening.



Thursday, August 11, 1966

Another cloudy foggy day. I didn’t do much today. Betty and Carmen down to Mrs. Hansen’s for lunch. Dorothea stayed with Barbara in p.m. Tonie not too good. We had heavy showers in evening. Craig Fleck called. Jeff watched TV in a.m. I froze shell beans. Kennard called.

I done up my work. Betty and children up, washed. Betty wrought up about her life. She took me to town to do my shopping.

August 5 - 8, 1966 Celebrating Nanny's 56th Birthday



Friday, August 5, 1966

Carmen sick. They didn’t sleep last night. Mike up to Betty’s, he went out looking for a job. No luck. He has left and gone back to Auburn now. I guess he has gone out of Betty, Carmen and Kimberly’s life at last. Betty and children didn’t come up today. I called on them.



Saturday, August 6, 1966

A beautiful day. I done up my work, had beans, brown bread and rolls. Betty and I to town. Carmen real sick. Betty took her to the doctors. Enlarged tonsils, weak eyes and infection in the ear. They went home early. Kimberly stayed up here tonight.



Sunday, August 7, 1966

A beautiful day. We was more or less busy all day and at night they honored me with my 56th birthday. I got money, under clothes, candy, powder and perfume. Had a beautiful cake and ice cream. Fern, Lloyd besides the family was here. Dorothea brought home turkey today.



August 8, 1966 56

Another nice sunny day. We washed, clothes dried good. We, Betty, children and I went to Norway. Came home, got supper. Dorothea up in PM, brought some corn on the cob and other goodies. Betty and children home early, the kids don’t feel well. Bill called Mr. Doucette. He will call us back tomorrow night to let us know whether they take the place or not. Kennie and Dot called. Tonie not very good today.

August 1 - 4, 1966



Monday, August 1, 1966

A beautiful day. Hot. We got the wash done in good season but had to wait to get it hung out. We had so much. Betty to town with the car, got oil changed. She saw Mike. Betty did the ironing before she went home. Measured well at the trailer, about 8 feet.



Tuesday, August 2, 1966

A nice day, hot. Betty got up here about 11. She prepared a picnic. Mike was supposed to go but didn’t. Betty and kids went on a picnic down in the woods. Had a good time. Dorothea took her license over to Stanley Allen to be sent in for the car. We called at Betty’s and Fern’s. I made a cake today. I cleaned up the house.



Wednesday, August 3, 1966

Cleared off after a rainy night. A beautiful day, on the cool windy side. Betty brought her kids up today. I didn’t do much. Wrote to Esther. Mike stayed at Betty’s. She said he is on the uneasy side, wants to get out with that awful gang again. Betty is trying to see if she can get him to settle down and act his part as a MAN with a family. I’m afraid it will be useless. He needs some professional help. A lady called here from Arkansas.



Thursday, August 4, 1966

Betty up today. Carmen don’t feel very good. Dorothea had the afternoon off. I checked over things in my desk.
