The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 23 - 26, 1985 Eddie Returns

A nice day. I done up the work, ironed. We picked garden things. Billie worked all day. Dorothea had a bad day, nervous and all upset. I hope she will get better soon.

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 24, 1985

 

A cooler day, sunny. Betty and Walt went to Rhode Island. Billie mowed Andrew’s hay. Carmen came up, she took me to town. Dorothea called, she was some better than yesterday. Bill had nosebleed all day, bad at times.

 

 

 

Thursday, July 25, 1985

 

Cool early when we got up but it got hot and muggy. Kim came up. She helped picked beans then she cleaned her car and got their lunchs then went home to get her house cleaned up before Eddie comes tomorrow. I got the beans ready, made a cake, got the things ready to cook for supper. I took a bath and watch some shows. I went to town with Betty.

 

 

 

Friday, July 26, 1985 RAIN, EDWARD BOULTER AND HAPPY KIM

 

Cloudy and we got rain today, a good lot of it. They had bad winds in Portland. The garden sure had what it needed. Now the drought has broken, it may be we will have a little more rain. I did a wash. Carmen called. Well today’s the day Kim has been counting up to. She met Eddie this morning at the airport. He was so glad to get back. They really love each other. They are a nice couple. I wish the best for them and always.

It got hot again. I did a wash. We picked the peas and string beans. Bill been in bed all day, a bad cold. In evening Billie Deming called. He showed us all his pictures. They are very nice. He has turned his life around from what he was before he left for the service. He is in a new life altogether. I’m so please for him and I know it is a good feeling for Esther. He is doing real well.

 

 

 

Saturday, July 20, 1985 hot and humid

 

Norma came and got Bill’s car to use tomorrow to go to New Hampshire to see some of her classmates. It has been very hot all day. I did not washed kitchen floor. Cleaned up the house a dite. Zack up here for supper. Betty and Walt over to Charlene’s cottage for Walt’s birthday supper. Kids up here today, Carmen up to camp all day. Kim has good news, she is going to get more hours at the nursing home. Good news.

A nice day. I did the wash, on the cool side. Norma brought the car back. Dorothea called here and she was in a very nervous condition. I don’t like to see her that way.

I done up the work. Watched my morning soap. I defrosted the fridge. Betty, Bill, kids and I over to Harrison Heights to look at a place. I don’t like it. I bet it would be dangerous place to live, all made hill land. Also we went over to Fryeburg to see the place Carmen liked. Came home, cooked a steaks supper in the new grill. Had peas, very good. Had Zack up. Betty and Walt out for supper ta Kay Fleck Maynard’s. Dorothea called today. Milan’s folks gone up to New Hampshire. I ironed. Kim and Carmen up.

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 17, 1985 MOWED HAY

 

A very nice cool sunny dry day. Billie mowed Walt’s hay. I picked rest of peas and some string beans for supper. Kids called. Bill, Betty and kids over to Fryeburg and Norway. Norma and Dorothea took a ride looking at antiques.

 

 

 

Thursday, July 18, 1985 Susan’s party

 

I went to town with Dorothea today. I came home, got peas ready for supper. I did my hair in PM. Jason up here while Betty and Norma went to town. In evening up to Dorothea’s for Susan’s graduation party. She did very well and stuck to it. I’ll be glad when she gets a job now. Butch’s baler broke down. He couldn’t finish baling the hay. Walt went up to see man and he came right down with his baler and got rest of that baled and they got it all in.

Milan’s first week over for the trip to Portland for his throat treatment. Norma Gay stayed at the apartment last night. Regina and Jason also.

 

 

 

Saturday, July 13, 1985

 

A quite nice day. I got up early. Got the breakfast, done up most of the work. Bill took me to town. I got a few things. David called this morning for coffee. Bob Thomas called also. He is moving to Saco. He and his wife are alone. Their boy graduated and gone to the service. I made a cake, washed the floors. Got a pot of beans baked and we went up to camp for supper. Milan and his family, Joy, Cindy and friend. Walt, Zack, Betty and Sarah Ingraham. We enjoyed it.

Up and done up the work. We picked some peas, up to camp for a little while, Twin Oaks.

 

 

 

Monday, July 15, 1985 Very Hot and Humid, hearing aid

 

A very hot and humid day. I did the washing. I picked and froze a lot of Swiss chard greens. Kids called. Today the hearing aid man came and tested Bill for two hearing aids. He was here all PM.

A nice sunny morning but it clouded up. Had showers around all day. They didn’t mow the hay at Walt’s or David’s. I did some of the washing and Betty called and wanted to know if I wanted to go to Norway shopping. I did, we saw Randy and a friend of his. I came home, finished the washing, got supper to going. David called this morning.

 

 

 

Tuesday, July 9, 1985 NORMA GAY SMITH KNICK, RAJINA AND JASON CAME TONIGHT, PERM

 

I got breakfast, done up the work, took a bath and shampooed my hair. Down to Barbara’s, got my hair done. Came home, did a wash. Bill took a shower. Billie up to David’s. They got a lot of haying done that was all ready. Billie, Walt and Zack helped to get the hay in. I had a early meal tonight. Then got ready to go to the airport. Kim came up in PM and then up to go to Portland Airport with Betty and I. We left about 5:45, waited a better than an hour. They arrived at about 8:25 on time. We all was so glad to see them all. They looked good, we went to Betty and Milan’s. We had Italian sandwiches. Talked a while. Carmen came. I got home at about midnight. Bill to the hospital for checkup, he is the same.

Cloudy, kind of rainy. I worked at the desk to get the bills ready etc. They got David’s hay in today. He is all done. I went up to Dorothea’s with Bill tonight to watch them get the rest of the hay in.

Cleared off and a nice day. I been busy all day. Zack to the Carnival tonight. Dorothea had the day off. She went places. Bill quite good.
