The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 14 - 17, 1985

Tuesday, May 14, 1985

 

It was cloudy and showery, light rain. Then it cleared and got awful hot. I done my washing early, than got ready. Betty, Carmen and I went to North Windham, got a few things that over to Norway and shopped some more, then I got my kitchen curtains that Bolsters. Bill not feeling too good, a touch of diarrhea. He didn’t do anything. Billie out riding with Arthur Andrews over to his brothers. Carmen at work tonight.

 

 

 

Wednesday, May 15, 1985 cleaned 2 B.R. and bath

 

A nice clear day, sun came up the regular time. It has been very mild. I got my work going to early. Getting ready to clean. Betty came about 9 AM. She cleaned the two bedrooms and bathroom. She bought the shower and pump down to Milan and Betty’s. Kim up early, she got her breakfast and Billie’s. They ate together. She went down and got Betty’s supper to going. Dorothea dropped in this PM. Bert Downey died last night. A nice family friend. A nice person, too bad. Billie set fence posts and Bill painted.

 

 

 

Thursday, May 16, 1985

 

Today Holly came, she cleaned the walls and ceilings. Betty and I did all the living room. The new curtains and drapes look very nice. We done a lot of other jobs. Also Bill and Billie in and out all day. Carmen called and Milan.

 

 

 

Friday, May 17, 1985 HOUSE ALL CLEANED

 

Cloudy in a.m. Later it was sunny. Today I got rest of house cleaned. Betty did a lot and it looks very nice. I’m so please. Dorothea, Kimmy and Milan. Betty and Carmen also Zack. Today and tomorrow is Kim’s day. She met her friend Eddie’s parents, brother and sister. She had her hair cut tonight. She went to the clambake at the Academy.
