The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 1 - 5, 1960 Happy New Year








Friday, January 1, 1960

Happy New Year to everyone. Bill didn’t have to work. I cooked. Dorothea and Jeff down to Ferns today. Last night Dorothea and Betty were over to Barbs. We watched the Rose Bowl parade on TV.



Saturday, January 2, 1960

Done up the work. Dolores, Eval Whitney and Blanche called. In late p.m. Dorothea, Blanche, Jeff and I went to Norway. Billie was so mad because we didn’t get home earlier.



Sunday, January 3, 1960

A nice day. Did up the housework. Kennie and Dot called in p.m. Not much happened today. I called at Mrs. Kilborn’s in evening.



Monday, January 4, 1960

A very nice day. I washed and the clothes dried very good. Dorothea and Jeff over to Barbs. Tonight Starlite went much to Betty’s sorrow. He was a cute fellow and I really liked him. A seven-month-old colt. Today I got a desk calendar from Esther.



Tuesday, January 5, 1960

A very nice day. I ironed. A very nice day. Betty stayed at Dolly’s all night. Dr. Nash paid $33.

Billie, Lloyd and Betty up to Irwin Morey’s and Billie bought a durham calf. Betty had Starlite out.



Monday, December 28, 1959 Snowing

Betty very sick tonight. She want feeling very well when she got up. Up to Dawn’s. Had the doc come to see her tonight. He said it is a strep sore throat or scarlet fever. Got to stay in bed for two days. Billie, Dorothea, Jeff and I downtown this a.m.



Tuesday, December 29, 1959

Cloudy and snow, a lot of snow came in the night. Billie and Bobby plowed and shoveled. Betty still very sick. Dorothea washed today. I didn’t do much today. She used the new tubs, they are nice. No school today because of awful storm. No mail got through today.



Wednesday, December 30, 1959 William M Crook Sr. 51st Birthday

Cleared off in the night. A real nice day, quite warm. The mailman was quite late today. Dorothea and Jeff over to Barbs. Betty still sick. She stayed a bed. Billie worked at Chet’s in p.m. Dr. Skillins here at supper time to see Betty. Maurice came and brought grain and hay. Kennard and Dolores called in evening. Dennis plow driveway in evening. Oil man came today.



Thursday, December 31, 1959

A very nice day. Betty better, had Starlite out and in p.m. she went to the corner and to town. Kennie, Dot and Wanda Jean called in p.m. Billie worked at Chet’s. I ironed. Fred Alexander Jr got hurt very bad today at the transmission company. In early evening Billie took me to town, I paid telephone bill and got the insurances off. Dorothea and Betty over to Barbs in evening for the old year out and new one in. The end of 1959.  Goodbye.
Dorothea and Jeff here twice this year. Met Dennis and Jeff for the first time during this past year.

December 24 - 26, 1959 Merry Christmas!



Thursday, December 24, 1959

A nice day. Cooked, got ready for Christmas. Betty came home late in p.m. Dorothea and Jeff over to Harrison with Barbara and Wesley skating. Billie here, there, and everywhere. Our tree looks very nice with a lot of gifts all around. I have a large package on the tree from my kids???? Allen Nash and family came up from Yarmouth to get Dr. Nash this evening. George Allen and Bill Walsh over and got the desk today.



Friday, December 25, 1959

A very nice day, not too cold. This was a nice Christmas day. Dorothea and Jeff being here maded a very happy day. First time she has been home in four years. We all had a nice lot of gifts and a good dinner with Fern and Lloyd here. Had Turkey, roast pork, and chicken, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnip, onions, shell beans, a delicious salad Dorothea made, rolls, nut bread, date filled pie, custard pie, suet pudding, cake, ice cream and cookies. Tea and coffee. Jeffrey was so cute all day. Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis, Kennie, Dot, Bob and Blanche here also Raymond called. We talked with Esther and Susan, Joy and Buddy and Dorothea talked with Mrs. Adair and family. Got set of tubs and diary, frying pan, dress, cup saucer, shoes, hose, paints, matts, stationery, 5 pounds chocolate too etc.

 


Saturday, December 26, 1959

A nice day. I ironed. Dorothea cleaned up the house. Betty away all day as usual. Dorothea and Jeff over to Barbs in p.m. and to supper. Billie and I to town, got a few groceries. Betty home for supper and off skating. Dorothea brought Jeff home and out bowling.

December 19 - 23, 1959 Lot of shopping and callers before Christmas



Saturday, December 19, 1959

Cloudy and a few snow flurries, about 3 inches came last night. Been quite busy today, cooked, churned, Dorothea decorated windows and Christmas tree. Jeff sure is excited about that. Betty to Portland again today. Kennard and Dolores left for New Jersey today, down to Carlton’s.



Sunday, December 20, 1959

A nice day. Kennie, Dot, Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis, Jack, Sylvia, Judy. Barbara and Wesley. Bob and Blanche all called today. D and Aunt Ava over to Os Abbotts. D and J down to Howard Conant’s. I washed etc. Betty and Bill made a stall for Starlite.



Monday, December 21, 1959 COLD

A nice day but cold. Today Dorothea, Billie and I over to Norway to do Christmas shopping. Betty slept most all day. She is better after getting much-needed rest. Mike called her tonight.



Tuesday, December 22, 1959

Cold and cloudy. To town today and done some shopping. Betty down to Dolly’s. Stayed all night. Barbara over this evening.



Wednesday, December 23, 1959

Cold, a nice sunny day, but cold. I done some cooking. Dorothea and Barb to Portland. I washed. Betty here with Dolly all day. Went skating. Had the colt out.

A very nice day. On the cold side. We washed, went to town. Dorothea over to Norway to see about her pictures. Mike called to see Betty tonight. They walked to town together.



Tuesday, December 15, 1959

Cold this morning, 15 above. Clouded up today. Dorothea and I to town and over to Norway in p.m. Barb took she, Jeff and I over. Wesley went too. She got her colored picture and it is very good. Betty gone bowling tonight. Lloyd up here in the early evening to look at some deeds to see about some lots.



Wednesday, December 16, 1959

A very nice day. Down town, paid taxes and a couple other bills. Came home. Betty came home and Linda Berry came too. They curled their hair and Dorothea gave Betty the works and she looked like a million. Very pretty. The B H. S. concert was very good. Betty in the glee club. Dorothea, Fern and I went. Lloyd went to work at Dielectric here in Bridgton.



Thursday, December 17, 1959

Another nice day. We have had real good weather lately. Dorothea and I up to see Blanche and to town. Came home, D. made a birthday cake for Dr. Nash. He was pleased. Ken and Dolores called in evening. Dorothea and Jeff over to Barbs in p.m. Dolly, Martin and Maurice called to see the horse tonight.



Friday, December 18, 1959

Clouded up in p.m. It began to snow at dark. Dorothea, Betty and I down to get the tree. Betty got a very pretty one. In evening, Dorothea, Betty and Jeff downtown. Jeff got hair cut. I ironed in evening. Billie over to Harrison and got his haircut.
