The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 8 - 12, 1959 School Begins



Tuesday, September 8, 1959 LETTER ADAIR

I ironed and churned. Betty came home from Dawn’s tonight. Today we got two letters from Dorothea, was so glad to hear from her.



Wednesday, September 9, 1959 SCHOOL BEGAN

Betty entered the junior class of B. H. S. Glad to get back. Dawn and I took Billie’s car, went down and got grain. Also picked Betty and Arthurlene Andrews up. Got Betty new shoes, slacks and shorts. Betty here for supper tonight. I done a lot of odds and end jobs today I wanted to get done. Betty stayed at Georgette’s while her husband is away.



Thursday, September 10, 1959

Not so hot today, yet sunny till late p.m. than got cloudy. I cooked, went down to Ferns. Davis Kimball here tonight to see the cow. Betty up to Georgette’s.



Friday, September 11, 1959

Rained all this a.m. Bill return home from Jims. I cleaned up the house, churned. In p.m. Bill and I to town. Betty home from school then back down to Mary Cannells. Billie and I got apples over to Raymonds for pies tonight. Betty up to Holly’s in eve.



Saturday, September 12, 1959

On the cool side. I washed. Lloyd here in late a.m. Billie mowed lawns. Betty babysat tonight at Irene’s. Dr. Nashed watched ballgame’s. Bill down to transmission shop to sign up for a job.
