The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 7 - 11, 1959



Wednesday, October 7, 1959 Rain Rain

It has rained all day. I finished the draws in the kitchen. Didn’t do very much of anything really. Kennard called in p.m. Mary Cannell came home with Betty tonight. They went downtown after supper. Raymond called in p.m.

I done up the work, washed, cooked and churned.



Friday, October 9, 1959 Rain Rain

I ironed, washed windows, put up the curtains. Dolores called in a.m. We made plans for a birthday party for Fern. In p.m. Billie took me to town to do the weeks shopping.



Saturday, October 10, 1959

It cleared off all nice and sunny this morning when we got up. It was very warm all day. I cooked. Billie didn’t work. Bill home at 1:30 and still very lame. I washed. Billie all around today looking for beef cattle. He and Betty over to Elmer Fogg’s. Bill had two teeth out tonight.



Sunday, October 11, 1959

Cloudy and rain. Didn’t get up very early. Done up the work. Bill not so lame. Rose and children called, Aunt Ava and Lewis, Kennie, Dot, Gordon and Sally and girls. Mike called today. Betty up to babysit today. I wrote three letters. Pig sick – lame.
