The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 10 -13, 1959



Tuesday, November November 10, 1959

A very nice day. I ironed etc. Betty and Mary Cannell over to Harrison to Linda Rand’s and some other girls to a party. This p.m. Mama and I went up to North Conway with Aunt Ava, Mama. Called and saw Harriet Randall and her father and mother. A nice ride. Very warm.



Wednesday, November 11, 1959 Norma Gay Smith’s birthday and Milan and Betty’s wedding anniversary

I done the regular work, cooked etc. Tonight I went over to June’s and got a permanent. Betty babysitting at Irene’s. Mike came up to see her.

PERMANENT.



Thursday, November 12, 1959

I washed and churned. Done some cooking etc. Betty babysitting up to Irene’s. MIKE saw her tonight.



Friday, November 13, 1959

Cold cloudy. I cleaned up downstairs, did the floors, washed them I mean. In p.m. Fern and I went over to Oxford with Aunt Ava to take Bertha McAllister home. Tonight Betty spent the evening with Mike. They went to the movies. A very enjoyable evening. Got home at 3 AM. He left for Auburn the 14th.
