The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 8 - 11, 1968 Only Took Two Years


Monday, April 8, 1968

Partly cloudy, some rain showers. I washed. Gordon came and worked on the breezeway. Came back after supper and they put up the ceiling on breezeway. Norm and Barb Stanford called. I did some more varnishing.



Tuesday, April 9, 1968

Not a very good day. Cloudy and very windy. Gordon here and finished most of the breezeway. The molding hasn’t come. I did some more varnishing, sanding etc.



Wednesday, April 10, 1968

A beautiful day. I did some varnishing on breezeway after I got it swept. Also did some plaster work in closet. Bill did the walls in bedroom tonight. Helen Smart and Linda Smart called. Gordon here for a little while.



Thursday, April 11, 1968

Cloudy in a.m. and some snow and rain. It cleared in p.m. I did rest of closets and cleaned woodwork in my bedroom. Bill and Billie put the light in REFRIGERATOR. It has been out for two years. Also put the switch on down cellar, a signal switch. Gordon came up and helped them. Also put on a few draw pulls. I got my hair SET tonight.

April 4 - 7, 1968


Thursday, April 4, 1968

Showery day. I finished my sandpapering. Bill varnished rest of the kitchen tonight. Dr. Martin Luther King, a great Negro hero and leader was shot tonight in Memphis Tennessee. No one called today.



Friday, April 5, 1968

A cloudy windy day. It was 55° above when we got up this morning. I done a lot of sanding and also some varnishing. Bill varnished in evening. Talked with Betty twice, they came tonight, staying at Ferns.



Saturday, April 6, 1968

A beautiful day. I got up, got myself ready and Carmen. We went to Portland with Betty and Walt. Walt went to the University of Maine library in Portland. Fern went and she got new shoes. We called at Dorothea’s on way home. Jeff joined the (?) Peblos Club in Portland.



Sunday, April 7, 1968

A very nice day. Carmen had asthma when she got up. Had to take her to Ferns. They got ready and went back early. Bill varnished all day. Billie gone with Lawrence. I sanded all the woodwork.

March 30 - April 3, 1968


Saturday, March 30, 1968

A beautiful day, on the very windy side and cool. I wrote two letters, one to Esther, one to Jean. Bill home working on the walls. Gordon didn’t come to work at all. Bill worked on the walls all day. Lida Randall 92 today. No Thomas family today.



Sunday, March 31, 1968

Very mild and sunny. A beautiful day. A lot of snow gone. Bill worked on the walls, very mild and sunny. Lloyd called. Dolores and Dot called. I didn’t go to the hospital tonight. I’ve been busy all day. House is a MESS. I’ll be so glad when it is all done.



Monday, April 1, 1968 WIND

I did my washing after it got cleared off in p.m. It was awful windy. I did some sanding, picking up etc. Gordon didn’t come today. Billie and I down to see Fern tonight. Billie raked a little outside tonight. Bill worked on the walls. First time raking this spring.



Tuesday, April 2, 1968 WINDY

A nice sunny day. But awful windy. Mama been gone four years today. Still miss her. I enjoy the many thoughts of her I have and they are with me each day. Today I did another wash and done a lot of sanding. I talked with Esther and Betty. I called at the hospital this evening to see Fern. Clothes blowed awful on line today.



Wednesday, April 3, 1968 FERN HOME

A beautiful clear nice sunny day. No wind. Fern came home today from NCM Hospital. Hope she will be okay. She and Lloyd came up to get their washing. I did two big ironing and wash. Bill began varnishing tonight. I got the kitchen and living room all sand papered.

March 26 - 29, 1968


Tuesday March 26, 1968

A nice day. I ironed, did a big ironing. About 1 PM today Fern went to NCM hospital for checkup, observation etc. Lloyd called on way home. He felt kind of blue about Fern.



Wednesday, March 27, 1968

A very nice and sunny day. The snow went a lot today. I worked in my bedroom. Got a lot of things done. Lloyd called. Gordon didn’t come to work. They burned the fields over down to Lloyd and Fern’s old place. In evening Billie and I called to see Fern in the hospital.



Thursday, March 28, 1968

On the partly cloudy side. I picked over some more boxes. Packed away some things in the bureau draws. Lloyd called. In evening I went down to the hospital to see Fern. Dot and Lorraine where there. Fern in pretty good spirits. She began on her diet today. Gordon didn’t come to work.



Friday, March 29, 1968

Partly cloudy and with rain showers. I done up my work, got ready and went to town with Lloyd. Got a wedding gift for Billie to give Bonnie Chadbourne and Jim Tarbox. Alice Boynton came up and brought me up some nice smelts. Also Gordon came today and worked on the breezeway. I went to town after supper and later in evening down to hospital to see Fern. Sally called.

March 23 - 25, 1968


Saturday, March 23, 1968

Another cloudy rainy day. I cooked. Cleaned up around, ironed a dite. Took a bath, prepared dinner. The Horton’s got here about 1 PM. All well and happy, glad to see them all. Gordon came and put formica top on the corner shelf. Bill worked on the walls. I made rolls, brown bread etc. About 5:30 Dorothea and family came. We had supper and birthday cake and ice cream. They got nice gifts and money. All had a good time. Jeff had his friend with him. And Fern was here, also Norm and Barbara came up.



Sunday, March 24, 1968

At last the sun came through today. It was snow flurry a lot but on the whole a very pleasant day. I got up and got dinner to going, got breakfast. Betty and Walt done a lot of running around doing this and that. Bob Winslow here for dinner. Betty and family left about 5 PM. Sally, Gordon, Vicki and roommate called. Bill worked on walls all day. Billie with Lawrence down country. Fern and Lloyd came in evening.



Monday, March 25, 1968

A beautiful clear and sunny day, just like spring. Water running, bare spots down through the fields. I used to say up through the fields when I lived down home. Gordon came, did some wiring, put me up some shelves in the bedroom. Started the work on the breezeway.

March 19 - 22, 1968


Tuesday, March 19, 1968 Mild

A mild day but very dreary rain. I did my work, made a pie. Fern and Lloyd called. Fern going to hospital for tests tomorrow. Gordon came this afternoon, he did some odds and end jobs, shelf in bathroom, a shelf in closet and a few other.



Wednesday, March 20, 1968 Mild

It was foggy, cloudy and partly fair. Had some sun, not enough to do any harm. I went to South Paris with Aunt Ava to get her dog vaccinated for rabies. Gordon came up here all day. He got a lot of the draws done.



Thursday, March 21, 1968 Mild

Partly cloudy day. A little sun. I did up the work, did some figuring. Ironed, washed and mended. Such awful miserable day. In evening Billie and I called at Ferns and Stanfords. Gordon didn’t work, went to a selectmen’s and town officials meeting at Gorham. Dorothea called in evening.



Friday, March 22, 1968

Another miserable day. In a.m. I went to town with Fern and Lloyd. I did some errands, made arrangements for Billie and Dave’s birthday. Gordon came today and he finished the draws and put a shelf and an open cupboard by side of my washer. In evening Bill and I to town grocery shopping. Came home, did a lot of picking up and getting the house tidied up for the arrival of Hortons. I called them at 11 o’clock and they hadn’t left. They are coming tomorrow.
