The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 4 - 6, 1968 Carmen's 5th Birthday

Sunday, February 4, 1968

A nice day. Up early this morning. Took a bath, got breakfast, and we were ready to leave at 7:15 AM for Betty and Walt’s. Had a little trouble with the car heater. It held us up a while. We got to Dorothea and David’s about 8:15. Soon on our way. Get to Betty and Walt at 10:15. All glad to see each other. Dorothea was so pleased to go, first time she had been there. Carmen looks so pretty all dressed up and cute. Also Kim was a dear. Jeff and Carmen had a real good time and very good all day. Carmen had many nice gifts, wristwatch, toilet sets, sweatshirt, pajamas, books, cutout dolls, doll and carriage and money and other things. We had cake and ice cream. A very nice dinner and a good time by all.

Guests included Nanny and Poppa, Billie, Dorathea, David and Jeff

Toy box made by Daddy for Carmen

A beer to celebrate all the CROOKS have left?!?

A nice day, mild. I washed. Cleaned up the house. Gordon came and did some more work. I’ve been thinking of the good time we had yesterday. No one here today to visit. I did a lot of figuring.

A nice day, on the cold side in early morning. I done up my work. Wrote to Esther. Dolores called in PM. Mike called this evening. He is good at heart. He will be married this weekend. I hope he will be happy. I made a pie today.
