The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 5 - 8, 1984

Wednesday, September 5, 1984 Walt to NCM hospital, he is very sick, DOROTHEA’S FIRST VISIT TO THE DR. FOR HER SKIN PROBLEM

 

A all most clear day, a few fair weather clouds. I made a couple squash pies. Done up the work. Joy called for a little visit. Also Kim came up. She and Bill and I took Ava’s books back then we took a long ride over through East Stoneham, Lovell and Fryeburg. Carmen called today. Billie got some lemons over to Jennings Farm. Bill better. Billie too. Fern is improving too. Walt very sick and went to the NCM hospital. I hope he will soon get better. Dorothea to South Portland to begin her skin treatment which will last until late fall. I hope she gets cured. Bill mowed hay a Junior Chadbourne’s

 

 

 

Thursday, September 6, 1984

 

A beautiful day. I got up early, got my work done. Carmen, Kim, Fern and I to Portland to grocery shop. Fern got a lot of groceries. Betty down to see Walt this a.m. and evening. He is very sick. Carmen called this evening.

 

 

 

Friday, September 7, 1984

 

A nice day. I done my washing, defrosteded kitchen refrigerator. Carmen called today. Kim got a call from the Hazen House for an interview for a job tomorrow morning. Kim up today, she and Carmen down town tonight with Lisa. Betty down to see Walt this a.m. and evening. Bill and I called at Betty’s. Carmen got through at Fern’s tonight after supper for the weekend. She, Lisa and Kim went to Norway to get the dog. Zak up this evening. His first week of school gone as a freshman. Billie mowed Walt’s second crop. Walt better tonight.

 

 

 

Saturday, September 8, 1984 Carmen got her car back, Walt Home

 

A beautiful day, sunny all day, not too hot. I done up regular work, washed floors. Made rolls, baked BK beans. Walt came home this forenoon from the NCM hospital. He is better. Today Carmen got her car back. Bill and Zak mowed lawns. Billie and Zak raked up the grass. Carmen, Zak and Billie got it in. Kim done the lawn trimming. She and Carmen out looking for a job for Kim. She has two to decide on. Carmen and Kim out shopping today. Carmen is pleased to be around home. Zak up for breakfast. Dorothea called this a.m. She has two days off from going to her doctor.

September 2 - 4, 1984 First Day of School

Sunday, September 2, 1984 HORSES IN FIELD, Carmen to work at Fern’s

 

A quite nice day, on the coolish and windy side. Today they finished the fencing and got the horses in. Carmen and Kim helped with the fencing and Betty and Walt. Zak up to Dorothea’s all day helping her. Billie got tired. Tonight Fern has a new hired hand, Carmen. She got home from Doreen’s early this morning. She had a good time.

 

 

 

Monday, September 3, 1984

 

A mixed day of weather, it rained early in a.m. Cleared some in PM. At suppertime the sun came out bright. Betty and Walt up to camp for the day. Kim came up early this morning. Dorothea still sold more things today. I watched TV shows, did the washing and ironing. This is Carmen’s first day of work at Fern’s. I hope it won’t be too boring for her. I hope sometime soon she gets a good paying job.

 

 

 

Tuesday, September 4, 1984 ZACK A FRESHMAN AT LRHS, FIRST Day of School, Walt sick

 

A fair day. Zak entered the freshman class at LR High. 14 years. We went down to see him leave. He looked very nice. Walt sick this morning, he didn’t work. Kidney infection. Carmen down to sign up for work at the new place opening up on Portland Street. Fern is improving. Kim called. Also Carmen dropped in.

A quite nice day, on the cloudy side. I washed. Dorothea called. She and Betty down to Fern’s. She is about the same. Carmen waiting for Billie to come so they can go fencing. They got the fence posts up and now ready to string the wire. I finished doing the shell beans. Bill been in bed most of the day. Fern still not good. Kim checking on a job at the Loaf and Ladle.

Dorothea having a sale for three days to get rid of her antiques and I hope she does. Betty gone to town for her today to do all the shopping. Carmen to the dentist. Kim over to Sharon’s to work babysitting. Dorothea did a good lot of business.

 

 

 

Friday, August 31, 1984 Bill $374 me $163, ZAK HOME from his week at camp

 

A kind of a cloudy showery day. I did the regular work. Carmen and I down town. Bill and Billie up to Dorothea’s off and on. This PM Betty and I down to LR high school to pick Zak up. He liked at, it was all different for him. No family, no farm chores to do. He found it interesting and fun for him. Betty and Carmen up to Dorothea’s. They bought some things. Billie mowed down to Walt’s. Kim working. Dorothea did another day of good business.

 

 

 

Saturday, September 1, 1984

 

A mostly nice day. No humidity which was good. We had a lot of heavy wind and some rain showers, nothing to amount to anything. A nice day on the whole. I done work up, made rolls, brownies, washed floors etc. Bill and I up to Dorothea’s again. She had Zak, he helped her a lot. She did another day of good business. Carmen to the wedding reception for Doreen McHatton. She and Lisa. She married Carrol Buck of Stoneham Maine.

August 26 - 28, 1984 Zak Away to Camp

A beautiful day. I didn’t do much. Carmen called, also Dorothea and Kim. Kim worked up to Dorothea’s helping her get ready to sell her things she has left over from her antique shop. I finished reading my magazines.

 

 

 

Monday, August 27, 1984 Billie up to see about getting chickens moved, David’s hay, Zak away to camp for a week, Bill and Billie to doctors

 

This is been a very nice sunny day. I got up early, got Billie up early, he had to go to the doctors over to Fryeburg for the callous on his foot. They didn’t remove it because of his health. I went down to LRH with Betty to take Zak down. He went to a nature camp up to Bethel or Bryant pond. I’m glad for him. Carmen went to Central Maine Power to sign up for a job. I hope she gets it. Fern is sick and in bed most of the time. Bill to the Dr., he has got to get cleaned out and get prepared for another complete examination. He isn’t very good. Carmen is happy to be at home. We went up to Dorothea’s. Bill, Betty, Carmen and I then down to Casco and Otisfield to look at a house.

A very nice day, it got hot and muggy. I defrosted refrigerator, made two pies. Picked all the shell beans. Dorothea helped when she called and I worked on the beans. Billie, Betty and Carmen worked on the fence. Bill preparing to go to the doctors tomorrow for tests, x-rays etc. Betty and I called at Fern’s. Zak not being around seems funny. Fern not at all good. Kim and Tara came up this evening and they stayed all night. Got the hay all done at David’s.

August 22 - 25, 1984 Carmen Moved Home

A very nice sunny day. Kim, Betty and I went to Portland to orthodontist for her last time. Also to the Dr. for cast for her feet to get them fitted for arch supports. We stopped at Carmen’s at Artel’s where she works and used Carmen’s car for the day. Zak and Milan sawed rest of the lumber. Jeff up tonight to go camping.

 

 

 

Thursday, August 23, 1984 Milan left at 7 AM

 

Made two pies and watched TV soaps. Billie to the doctor. He is doing quite well, there is a pulse in the left foot. His incisions are healing good. Zak to Dr. Shields at Lewiston. He is very good and won’t have to go back. A cloudy showery day, some sun. Bill Dunlop is missing at sea. I hope he will be found safe and sound. Milan called tonight, he got home at about 12 noon. First of the trip was very rainy.

 

 

 

Friday August 24, 1984

 

A partly cloudy and sunny day. I changed beds, done up the housework. Did a wash. Been busy all day, David called. Fern got quite upset again today. Carmen came at about 8 PM tonight. She will get her household goods moved back tomorrow.

 

 

 

Saturday, August 25, 1984 Carmen moved home today

 

A nice sunny day, not too hot. I done up my work. Carmen came for breakfast. Also Zak and Betty called. Today they moved Carmen’s things back to Bridgton. She went to see Fern. Fern is all shook up about Carmen getting another job.
