The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 4 - 7, 1984

Monday, June 4, 1984 Permanent, well another quite nice day

It has been quite a nice day after the clouds pass this morning. It was showery, a dite here, in some places had bad showers. This forenoon I got my permanent. Getting ready for Kim’s graduation. I came home in PM. I did a big washing and did all ironing, some from last week and today’s. Carmen called tonight after work. She is much more relaxed than she was last week when she didn’t know where or how she was going to live. She has her own place and a nice one. Bill mowed Fern’s lawn. Billie did all the trimming here. Betty cleaned and moved all things from the shelter. Dorothea helped her.

Billie washed all windows on the outside. A very nice coolish and a dite breeze. A good day to do the windows. They dried so good. I made a pudding. I cooked a fowl for supper, it was so good. I did a few odds and end jobs.

It turned out a very nice evening. I have been busy washing all my windows inside. I put up the drapes. I done a few other odds and end jobs then got ready to go to Baccalaureate. It was very nice, they all looked so nice with their cap and gowns. Fern went too. She got a chance to see Kimmy in her cap and Gown. I had a salad and cold chicken for supper.

It has been a very hot and humid day. No relief. I done up my regular work, done some odds and end jobs. Bill and Billie did a dite in the garden. Billie to Norway, got some things. Kimmy to rehearsal this forenoon. Then in late PM she and the girls went to Twin Rocks at Norway for the night. Dorothea and Iva called this evening. Betty got Zak a new camera, he brought it up to show me.
