The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 5 - 8, 1984 Billie's Cow Went

Thursday, July 5, 1984 Ellie May Gone

Cloudy and hazy. David came this morning and milked Ellie May for the last time. I hated so much to see her go. She has been such a good cow. She didn’t cost Billie anything, she paid for her keep by good calves, milk and cream. I never will forget her. I made out the bills and sent them. Clyde Rowe got her, the cow Ellie May. Zak and Bill mowed. We got rain showers. Dorothea called. Clyde Rowe called to see David’s heifers also.

It was kind of on the cloudy side and some rain. We got ready and went to Portland to be with Billie while he was being operated. We got there about 10:45 and he had just been taken into the operating room. So we went over through South Portland to the Mall and then went to DeMillo’s and had the best dinner. Then back to the hospital and he had just come into the recovery room. He was very sick and a lot of pain. He didn’t come to enough to realize we was there. Betty, Zak, Dorothea and I went. We saw Carmen. Had a good talk with the Dr. Donovan.

It rained blue guns all day long. Dorothea, Bill and I to the hospital to see Billie. He is not much better than he was yesterday. He did get back into the hospital ward today, pain is bad. His mouth is awful but in a few days that will be better. The car got wet and gave us trouble. A call from Betty Smith and Milan went into the hospital on Wednesday too and operated on Thursday. Same-day Billie was Friday.

A fair day, on the windy side. Sun at last anyway. I called Billie, he is about the same. Not any great improvement. I am very worried. I didn’t do much. I read the papers. Things are much different around here. Zak up and done chores. Bill and I called at Dorothea’s. She had a beautiful cake Lorraine and Dot had taken up to her. In evening Kim called a little while. Betty Smith called, they said the bunch they removed from Milan’s throat was okay.
