The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 13 - 15, 1984 Billie Home From Mercy Hospital

Friday, July 13, 1984 BILLIE HOME FROM MERCY HOSPITAL

Another very nice day, not too hot yet, a good hay day. No haying done. I did a wash. Bill to town. I cleaned up the house. Betty, Dorothea left about 10:15 to go get Billie. He was a little late getting home. He isn’t very good. Sore, kind of on the sickish side. Headache. He expects he will have to go back in about three weeks. Not much hopes of keeping his left leg. I’m quite worried about that. Dorothea and David came down after supper to see Billie.

Another very hot day. I have been very busy all day. I made bread, rolls, baked beans. I cleaned up the house. Zak here all day. He helped Billie. Billie isn’t very good. He can’t do too much, it will take some time for him to get healed in good shape. Zak stayed up again tonight. He went to the Old Home fair at Harrison with a friend. Dorothea and David called this evening.

Sunday, July 15, 1984 HOT HOT HOT

It has been a very very hot day. I done up the work. I defrosted refrigerator and Zak and I picked strawberries. Then Betty came and asked us to go up to camp. She and Walt had breakfast up there. She invited Esther, Fern, Joy and family, Susan and family. Also Sue Paul was there. Very late in PM Kim came. All of the kids, Zak, Rager’s, Wolff’s had the best time in the water. They played for a long time. Tara was so pleased to see Kim. Betty, Joy and Dorothea stayed up late to swim. Billie about the same. Bill didn’t go up, he wasn’t too good either, the heat. Kim back to camp late. Also a surprise. Jeff and his girl Lisa came, she is nice.
