The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 31 - November 3, 1977 Halloween

 

Monday, October 31, 1977 a very nice all sunny day

 

I did a big wash. I washed kitchen floor. Bill took me to town. Billie got a lot more things done today. The cow is getting acquainted and don’t bellow so much. She is a nice cow. Kim called after school. Bill is finishing up at camp.

 



 

 

 

 

Tuesday, November 1, 1977 a beautiful day on the cool side

 

We have had this nice sunny weather now for over a week. I done my regular work and then I went over to Dawn’s at Joy’s and help them get the shed ready for the hay and sawdust for Ebony and Gabriel. In PM I done a few odds and end jobs. Billie hauled sawdust (dry) for himself and Betty. I ironed, early in a.m. before breakfast. In evening Bill and Billie went down and helped Walt set his stove up. Bill all done work at the camps. Billie done some more odds and end jobs. Fern to South Paris. Lloyd is the same.

 

 

 

Wednesday, November 2, 1977 Pigs went

 

A most beautiful day. I done regular work, washed, done some desk work. Down to Betty’s, down to the new toolshed. Susan and Monica called. Betty and Walt got there stove set up and going tonight. They came and got the pigs this afternoon.

 




 

 

 

 

Thursday, November 3, 1977 $227.40 and $99.70

 

Cloudy in a.m., the sun came out in PM. A very nice afternoon. I done regular housework and washed the car windows and vacuumed both cars also. In PM Susan took Bill’s car and took Delores and I to town. Billie raked leaves at Betty’s. Bill didn’t do much, got his hair cut. Fern over to see Lloyd, he is just the same.

October 27 - 30, 1977

Thursday, October 27, 1977 cow, calf and painted living room

 

Bill worked at camp most of the day. Betty and Dawn came up and they painted the living room walls. A ivory, they looked very nice with the new curtains. Fern came up, she is very upset and depressed. Billie went with Lawrence. They shifted the cattle. Lawrence bought the Rhône heifer and brought Billie a dark red Durham steer. At night he and Lawrence went down to Allen Renfrew and Billie bought a very nice durham two-year-old milking heifer.

 

 

 

Friday, October 28, 1977

 

A very nice pretty day. I got up early, did a big ironing. I washed windows, cleaned rest of the breezeway. Susan over here and looked at the Florida pamphlets, cards etc. Billie took me to town to shop. Bill finished working at the Barnaby camp. The new cow is awful home sick. She milks good. Carmen went to a slumber party, she was here for supper.

 

 

 

Saturday, October 29, 1977 Another Beautiful Day

 

I got up early. 6 AM. I did my cooking, I got several breakfasts. Bill down to the Crawford cottage working. Zak came up early, had breakfast and watched cartoons. Billie mowed leaves, done chores and went with Lawrence in PM. Walt worked on the chimney or fireplace wall. I washed, washed floors, some windows, took bath, made bread and rolls. Kim up in PM and for supper.

Another very nice sunny day, on the cool side. I done regular work. Bill helped Walt. I looked over some Waterford town reports so I can get them put away. Billie didn’t do much. Kids up in PM playing with the skateboard. Betty and Carmen called in evening. Carmen to a supper and dance last night.

October 23 - 26, 1977

 

Sunday, October 23, 1977 NO RAIN

 

A BEAUTIFUL DAY. We got up this morning and it was very sunny and nice. Wind still blowing. I got the breakfast, made the beds. Billie said he was going over to Norway and going around looking for cattle. Fern and I went. We went to Buckfield and up to Woodstock, West Paris and Paris Hill. A very pretty ride. Fern enjoyed it all very much. Called to see Lloyd, he is very weak. Got home, Dorothea called. She took her pictures to show Kay. Mr. Saltman called. Walt worked on living room.

 

 

 

Monday, October 24, 1977 a beautiful day

 

I got my work done up. I did a big wash. I washed all the windows on the outside, garage one inside and out. I got ready, went to town with Betty. I cooked a boiled dinner for tonight. It was very good. Billie went with Lawrence all day. Bill worked at camp. Betty, Susan, Monica and I up and got milk.

 

 

 

Tuesday, October 25, 1977

 

A very nice day, sunny and warm. I got up, done most of my work, got ready and went to Portland with Betty and Carmen. Carmen went to the doctors for a checkup. She is in real good shape, her back is doing okay. Her weight is down. Fern went with us. We went out to the mall. I had a good red flannel hash for supper. Billie hauled bedding and covered the strawberries. Bill worked at camp. I did a big ironing early this morning.

Bill worked at Barnaby’s. Walt worked on his living room wall. I washed. Billie hauled manure and worked on the leaves. On the cool side. I washed all the windows on the outside and most of them on the inside.

Wednesday, October 19, 1977 Bill working

 

Another one of those cloudy rainy miserable days. I done a lot today. Got ready and supper prepared for company. Billie took me to town. Bill worked at Barnaby’s. I went down to Betty’s in PM. She and Walt were tearing out the back wall. Billie hauled out Walt’s wood to saw. Fern, Es and Cliff came about five. I had supper all ready to put on the table. Baked sliced ham with milk. Squash, cream cheese over cauliflower, boiled sweet potatoes and regular potatoes. Grilled English muffins, Indian pudding, whipped cream, brownies and coffee. They had a nice evening and we all enjoyed it.

 

 

 

Thursday, October 20, 1977

 

Rain as usual. I done up my work, went down to Betty’s and Fern came up. We made applesauce. I had a picked up supper. Billie busy all day. Bill worked.

 

 

 

Friday, October 21, 1977 Fern’s Birthday

 

Another partly cloudy day. I done up my work. Went to town. Then when I got home I did a big wash. Billie down to Walt’s, they started on the wood sawing. Betty and Carmen and Zak helped. I went down in PM. Dorothea came and got Zak. He went down to stay at Dorothea’s for a couple nights. Kimmy done the housework at Betty’s. Those cats and dogs have made an awful mess of things that Betty’s. I’m sorry to see them taking over. No one can keep the place clean. It is bad for Carmen in more ways than one.  Hard on Betty too. Bill worked.

Saturday, October 22, 1977 ES AND CLIFF LEFT FOR FLORIDA

 

Well it was quite a nice day, some rain showers. Sunny all PM. Es and Cliff left about 8 AM for Florida this morning. Glad I want going. Billie up and got chores done and down to Walt’s to finish the wood. They got it done in late PM. Fern up here in PM and for supper. Also Susan and children called. Bill down to camp for a while, didn’t do much. He helped to get rest of that wood sawed at Walt’s. Kimmy went up to Dawn’s for the night, she fixed Kimmy’s school clothes.

Well it rained again all day. I did the kitchen anyway. I got that done. Bill and Billie here all day. Kids up in PM a little while.

It is a little better this morning. Very damp outside. I did a dite of wash. It dried quite good. It clouded up in PM. We had a birthday party for Fern and Esther at Fern’s. They were surprised and happy. Thomases, Hortons, Ragers , Demings, Yates and Babbitt.

 






 

 

 

 

Monday, October 17, 1977

 

Had a very heavy rain and high winds all night. Today it has rained and a very miserable day. I been doing some odds and end jobs today. Billie outside doing what he could. Bill did not work today. Walt went to work. I went down to Betty’s in PM, looked at her Elvis Presley things.

 

 

 

Tuesday, October 18, 1977

 

This is been kind of a good day, enough warm sun so I got my clothes washed and dried. Also all my ironing done. Billie worked outside putting things away for winter. Also shut the water off etc. It seems so good to have such a nice day. Bill worked at camp all day.
