The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 17 - 20, 1977

Wednesday, August 17, 1977

Cloudy and rainy. Joy came over here this morning for breakfast. Betty came up also. We didn’t do too much today.

Thursday, August 18, 1977 beautiful day

A beautiful day all day. I got up early, went to town, got my work all done. Got lunches put up and we, Frances, Thena, Fern, Dorothea, Betty, Zak and I all went to Stoneham for the day. We ate lunch up in Grandpa and Grandma’s cow pasture at the family burial lot. We had a very good time. We went over to Uncle Len’s old home. We had a very nice ride and Betty showed us all around.

Friday, August 19, 1977 cool, insulated the tie up

A nice day, on the clear cool side. Kimmy here this forenoon, she stayed last night. She cooked, went to town with Bill and I. Her friend Laurie Smith came. She was very pleased about that. I made cookies and two loaves of bread for the bake sale and fair for New Hope Farm tomorrow. Kids in and out all day. Joy was at Betty’s a lot today. She is in quite a turmoil with Pat. I hope everything works out okay for them. Mike Ryan came and they’d done rest of concrete work in tie up.

Saturday, August 20, 1977 New Hope Fair

A pretty good day. It clouded up and a shower in PM. Today the New Hope Farm held their fair at Crystal Lake in Harrison. They did quite well. But a shower came and that put things to a stop. Joy is having problems with Pat. She is in a bad condition. In PM I went to the fair with Esther and Fern. Bill and Billie finished the work in the barn. Put water in.
