The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A very nice day, hot and humid. I got up early, got my ironing done, also did the refrigerator (defrosted), worked all day. I went down to Betty’s early in a.m. Bill and Billie worked in the tie up. Cliff entered the NCM hospital this PM for an operation tomorrow.

It was sunny this morning but it got cloudy. And by mid afternoon it began to rain. This PM Billie, Carmen and I went for a ride over through Fryeburg, saw all the large crops of string beans, potatoes, corn etc. Walt gone away for a few days. Joy down to Betty’s for supper. Today Cliff was operated on for gallstones and prostate. Dorothea came up late for a few days.

Kind of a cloudy dreary day. We sat up late last night. Dorothea has come up for a few days. Today she and I went over to Bill Walker’s. He is quite poorly. He gave Dorothea some old pictures and a few odd things. We had Zak. We came home, had a chicken supper. Then called at Fern and Esther’s. Joy also called. Walt came home tonight. Dorothea made a lot of calls yesterday. Also took Dot to see Lloyd.

Friday, August 12, 1977 rain, foggy and some sun, Billie got Pullets tonight

It was raining when we got up. It rained most of the day. We got up and got our work done up, went to town to grocery shop. Went to the lawyer Lane office to witness a will for Joy. Also one for Bertha Wiley. We left about 11:30. Betty, Dawn, Dorothea, Joy, Cindy and me for East Raymond to the Cemetery where Grandpa Smith is buried, also his first wife, a daughter and a son Joseph. Then we came back up to East Stoneham. We went to the graves on the Edwin Allen’s farm and then came back up the road to Papa’s birthplace and dug around there.
