The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 31 - November 3, 1977 Halloween

 

Monday, October 31, 1977 a very nice all sunny day

 

I did a big wash. I washed kitchen floor. Bill took me to town. Billie got a lot more things done today. The cow is getting acquainted and don’t bellow so much. She is a nice cow. Kim called after school. Bill is finishing up at camp.

 



 

 

 

 

Tuesday, November 1, 1977 a beautiful day on the cool side

 

We have had this nice sunny weather now for over a week. I done my regular work and then I went over to Dawn’s at Joy’s and help them get the shed ready for the hay and sawdust for Ebony and Gabriel. In PM I done a few odds and end jobs. Billie hauled sawdust (dry) for himself and Betty. I ironed, early in a.m. before breakfast. In evening Bill and Billie went down and helped Walt set his stove up. Bill all done work at the camps. Billie done some more odds and end jobs. Fern to South Paris. Lloyd is the same.

 

 

 

Wednesday, November 2, 1977 Pigs went

 

A most beautiful day. I done regular work, washed, done some desk work. Down to Betty’s, down to the new toolshed. Susan and Monica called. Betty and Walt got there stove set up and going tonight. They came and got the pigs this afternoon.

 




 

 

 

 

Thursday, November 3, 1977 $227.40 and $99.70

 

Cloudy in a.m., the sun came out in PM. A very nice afternoon. I done regular housework and washed the car windows and vacuumed both cars also. In PM Susan took Bill’s car and took Delores and I to town. Billie raked leaves at Betty’s. Bill didn’t do much, got his hair cut. Fern over to see Lloyd, he is just the same.
