The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 15 -18, 1962



Tuesday, May 15, 1962

Cloudy, showery drizzly day. I went down to Ferns and Lloyd’s. We worked up in the attic. I found a lot of odds and ends and I brought a lot of them home. Art Ward and his girls called.



Wednesday, May 16, 1962

Cloudy all day. I worked at Fern and Lloyd’s again today. I came home with more things I dragged down, out of the shed chamber from Fern’s. Blanche here again today. Bill mowed lawns again tonight for first time.



Thursday, May 17, 1962

Cloudy in a.m. It cleared in late p.m. I got caught up on some of my work. Made a cake for Art Ward’s family. I went to Portland in the evening was Sally and girls.



Friday, May 18, 1962

Very nice hot day. Blanche called, she fixed my curtains in living room. In PM Blanche, Mama and I over to Hilton Nursery to get some plants. We cleaned Mama’s closet and bureau draws. Had showers in late p.m. Bill and I to town in evening. Power off in late evening about 10 o’clock.

Friday, May 11, 1962

I finished painting the hallway, got some of the living room settled, finished it after I got home from town. Got the new curtains up. Billie went smelting tonight. Kennard called in evening. Mama didn’t feel too well today. Nothing serious.



Saturday, May 12, 1962

Pretty good day. On the cool side. I cooked, washed dining room and kitchen floor, dusted living room, cleaned a lot of smelts. Kennard called. Billie gone all day. Fern and Kennard here for supper. Fern here till midnight. I sent Betty’s box.



Sunday, May 13, 1962

A very nice day, later in p.m. the wind came up. On the whole a very nice day. I finished the painting in the hallway. Picked the first mess of dandelions today. Bill worked at Gordon’s. Billie cleaned his car and fixed pigpen. Blanche called, Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis also.



Monday, May 14, 1962

Rained all day. I washed. Dot, Lorraine and Wanda Jean called, also Blanche and Lloyd. I wrote to Betty and Dorothea. Sent Uncle Lewis’s birthday cards. Bill gave me $10 tonight to get a cover for green chair. Bill got the lawnmower tonight. Art and Joan have another girl, born at 3 PM Mother’s Day. Got a pretty card from the Adair’s. A nice letter from Betty and Mike and some nice pictures. One week ago tonight Dorothea and family called.

May 7 - 10, 1962 A Surprise Call From London!



Monday, May 7, 1962

A nice sunny day. On the cool northwest windy side. It seemed good to see the sun. I washed. Cooked, cleaned up the upstairs, washed all the floors up there and Billie’s room. I ironed tonight. TONIGHT A PHONE call from Dorothea and Dennis. A Mother’s Day greeting. What could be better? They called from London, England.



Tuesday, May 8, 1962

Cloudy, fair weather and cold. Windy. I washed and varnished the kitchen chairs and table, the hood over the stove. I cleaned Billie’s bureau draws and the desk. Also china closet draw. I wrote to Betty and Dorothea, also got Esther’s letter off. It was good talking with Dorothea and Dennis last night. Billie had to work tonight.



Wednesday, May 9, 1962

Windy Windy Windy. An awful wind has blown so hard all day and still is. Forest fires in Otisfield, Harrison, Naples and Casco. The town crew had to help fight them. Billie worked again tonight. Today I cleaned both hallways, bathroom and living room. Washed 14 pairs curtains. I got the bathroom and little hallway painted. Got a Mother’s Day card from Betty and Mike.



Thursday, May 10, 1962

Forest fires broke out over in Harrison again today. Town crew had to go over again. Bill didn’t get home till late. I painted in the living room. Cleaned the furnishings and moved them out. Rosalie here in a.m. Blanche here in p.m. Got a nice letter from Betty today. She and Mike are so happy.

Thursday, May 3, 1962 A LETTER FROM BETTY

I sure was glad to get a letter from Betty. It was good to hear from her, knowing she is all right, but no place to live. What will she do. I’m so worried. If only I could get to her. Rain Rain Rain. I finished varnishing the kitchen. Also done buffet and china closet. Kennie and Dot called. In p.m. went to Herbert Allen’s funeral.



Friday, May 4, 1962

Partly cloudy and showers. LETTER FROM BETTY. She has her apartment. It was a nice long letter. It was such a relief to hear from her, that she is all right. I have worried so much about her. I worked getting the dining room ready to paint and paper. I cooked. In evening I went to town. Mike got home from base. It pleased Betty.



Saturday, May 5, 1962

Partly cloudy day. It did rain some. I finished painting the dining room, getting it ready for Bill to paper in PM. In PM I went to Portland with Sally and girls, Linda and Vicki. Bill papered the dining room. Billie did his fencing. Blanche here in p.m. Fern up here in evening. We called at Ferns after supper. Her house looks so nice.



Sunday, May 6, 1962

A very nice, bright and sunny sunrise this morning. About 930 clouded up and rained hard all day. Billie did odd jobs. Bill down to Gordon’s in a.m. Did odd jobs in PM. I got meals, done up the work, churned and settle the new dining room. It looks so nice. Kennie, Dot, Kennard, Art, Fern, Lloyd and Bobby called.

Rain Rain Rain all day. Anyway, we papered the kitchen. It looks so nice. Aunt Ava called. Author Andrews and his boy called. In evening Lloyd and Fern came up and brought up Italian sandwiches etc. for supper. Very good. Got the kitchen all done. Kennie and Dot are upset.



Monday, April 30, 1962

Rain rain. No letter from Betty. I washed, cleaned up the kitchen. Lloyd called. Herbert Allen died early this morning. I cooked. Talked on the phone etc. Daylight Time and I hate it, way behind in my work all day. Bill down to Gordon’s after supper. Letter from Dorothea and her family.

I caught up on my reading, picked over a few things in living room. Made a cake and cupcakes, got the clothes in.

Rain Rain Rain. No letter from BETTY. I am so worried about her. I expected a letter from her. I varnished some of the kitchen.
