The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 12 - 15, 1962 Uncle Os Died



Monday, February 12, 1962

20 below. Uncle Os very bad. His mind is going, losing control of his kidneys etc. Blanche and I down there. He is getting very weak. I washed my washing before I went down. Came home, did the washing. Betty got birthday card from Adair’s. Also from her husband and a letter from him.



Tuesday, February 13, 1962 OSWALD LUCK DIED

10 above this morning. Uncle Os died at 11 AM. Fern, Lloyd and Blanche was with him. A very nice day, warm and sunny all day. I done a lot of work. I got behind being at Uncle Os’s so much. I cleaned up the house, ironed, got a note off to Betty with her cards from Adairs and Mike. Also letter from Mike. Aunt Ava called.

I now hope Fern and Lloyd will have a long happy life together. They have done very well by him.



Wednesday, February 14, 1962

A nice day. It don’t seem possible Uncle Os is gone. Fern and Lloyd very busy. A lot of callers, phone calls, cards etc. I cooked and churned. Got a letter from Betty. Tonight she got the call from MIKE.



Thursday, February 15, 1962

I cleaned up part of the house, washed windows. Fern, Lloyd called. Also Aunt Ava. I got clothes out and ready to go to the funeral. Billie been working overtime and can’t go to the funeral. Billie, Bob, Blanche, Delores and I went down to see Uncle Os. He looked very nice and looked much younger.
