The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 31 - April 4, 1962



Saturday, March 31, 1962

Clouded up. It rained in PM. Billie still quite sick. Bill helped Gordon in PM. In late PM Gordon came up here and they started on the shelves. I went down and picked out my covering for the top of the shelves. Kennard calls.



Sunday, April 1, 1962

Rain. Betty and Mike called today. It was good hearing from them. Today Bill and Gordon finished the shelves. They look so nice. Blanche, Aunt Ava, Kennie and Dot, Fern and Lloyd called. Billie better today, probably will be able to go back to work tomorrow.



Monday, April 2, 1962

Cold. I washed. Went down and wired some money to Betty and Mike. Billie home sick today.



Tuesday, April 3, 1962

Cold. 18 above this morning. I churned. Done up the work. Wrote two letters to Betty, one to Dorothea, one to Dawn. Fern and Lloyd called. Betty’s check came. I got it ready, Billie mailed it to her. Billie back to work. BETTY’S CHECK CAME.



Wednesday, April 4, 1962

Nice day, on cold side. I cleaned the yellow room. Small bare spots appeared in the field today. Kennard called. Also Fern and Lloyd.
