The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 4 - 7, 1962



Sunday, February 4, 1962

30 – 34 above. A nice day. Bill worked until 2 PM. Cleared off. I made a graham cracker pie. Blanche, Bob, Art and family, Kennie, Dot, Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called in p.m. Also Lloyd. Art shoveled off the back porch roof. I took a few pictures. Uncle Os in bed today, very sick and was last night. Billie and I called at Fern and Lloyd’s in evening.




Monday, February 5, 1962

Not too cold this morning. About 20 above. I washed, hung clothes out with just a sweater on. Betty’s check came today. Also she got a card from Mike. Art Ward called in evening. Also Gordon came to see what we need for pipe fittings etc.



Tuesday, February 6, 1962 Cliff’s birthday

A nice day. I got letters off to Betty and Esther. Done up regular work, got cold later in the day. Got the clothes in. Worked at my desk. Cooked a chicken for supper. Billie says he goes back to the Bridgton plant tomorrow. Billie downtown and to Ferns. He got two Italian sandwiches. I sent Betty’s check and card. Raymond gone one year today.



Wednesday, February 7, 1962 Letter from Betts

Billie back to Bridgton plant. First time since October 11, 1961. Cold again this morning. 15 below. I done up the work and ironed. Lloyd brought up some shirts etc. I washed them for them. This noon Billie came home for lunch. Billie and I called at Ferns in evening. Uncle Os quite bad.
