The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, January 20, 1962

Snow flurries. A nice day, on the cold side. I done up my work. Getting ready to take Betty to Boston tomorrow. Billie and Betty to town to do Betty’s errands. She had her hair fixed at Bessie’s etc. Kennard here in p.m. Dawn and Steve here for supper. Betty finished her packing after supper. Dawn helped her. Very cold in late evening.

Betty Louise Crook Boutilier left home today for how long I don’t know. She is so happy, kind of nervous too. Gordon, Sally, Bill and I took her to Boston’s Logan airport to take a plane to Cleveland, flight 507 to go and visit with Esther and family. After Mike comes back from his tour in Germany, which he has to take, she will go to be with him. We left home about 12:30, got up there about 3:00 with Betty until she left at 6:50 PM. I hated so to see her go. Yet this is the best thing for her. A new life is what she needs. I hope she finds an everlasting new happiness with her loved one Mike, her husband. God bless them both.

She arrived in Cleveland by plane at 9:30. Esther and family met her. She called home about 11 o’clock. We just got home. We had a good time. Betty enjoyed her trip up. Was nervous and also strange to her and me. We ate at Howard Johnson’s on way home. Had a lot of company here at home. Frances Harmon came, brought Betty and Mike a gift. Kennie, Dot, Fern and Lloyd, Art Ward and girls, Blanche.
