The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 19 - 22, 1962



Monday, March 19, 1962

Nice sunny day, on the cool and windy side. I sent the pictures to Dorothea. In PM I wrote to Betty and Mike, Thena too. I washed. Lloyd called. Kennard called. Aunt Ava called. Mama didn’t feel too good today. I sent letter and pictures to Dorothea.



Tuesday, March 20, 1962

A very nice day, warm and sunny. Snow settled a lot. The water run from the snow. I ironed, made a pudding. Fern and Lloyd called in a.m. Fern had a letter from Betty and Mike. Mama better today. Sent Betty her money today.



Wednesday, March 21, 1962

Kind of cloudy. I churned. I picked over a box of my things in my closet. Sort of the beginning of my cleaning. In evening Blanche called, brought a letter she had received from Betty and some snaps of the wedding and Christmas. No letter from Bet and Mike.



Thursday, March 22, 1962 William Meldrum Crook Junior’s birthday 31 years today

A nice warm day. I done some cleaning and picked over upstairs today. In evening Bill and I called at Gordon and Sally’s. Fern and Lloyd called, also Kennard.
