The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 5 - 8, 1963

Sunday, May 5, 1963

Cloudy in forenoon. Done up the usual work. Betty took Timmy home. We had company all day. Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis, Kennie, Dot, Bob, Blanche, Kennard called. In evening Fern and Lloyd came up. We had some good old smelts. Fern and I got them ready last night.



Monday, May 6, 1963

A beautiful day. I washed. We ironed after supper. Carmen up with a bad cold. Betty took her to Dr. Richards in p.m. Blanche took them down, said it was bronchitis.



Tuesday, May 7, 1963

A very nice day. I washed, cooked and got my room to going. I finished it up after supper. It was a very nice spring like day. Carmen seems some better. Betty on the punk side. She is sick. I’m worried about her. I cleaned my room today.



Wednesday, May 8, 1963

Cloudy all day, showers about 6:30. Carmen much better. I washed again. I cleaned the upstairs bathroom and hallway. I picked the first mess of dandelions today, they were so good. I ironed some things. I washed the curtains for my room after supper. Betty gone down to Barbara’s and Billie gone upstate smelting again. Betty better today. I sent a letter to Mike, also got Esther’s letter off today.

May 1 - 4, 1963 Smelt Season!



Wednesday, May 1, 1963

Cloudy most all day. A little spot of sun once in a while. Betty better, we finished the shed chamber. I was very busy all day. Billie gone upstate smelting tonight with the Bishop boys and Harvey Brooks. I shampooed my hair. Blanche brought a pumpkin pie over.



Thursday, May 2, 1963

Another one of those dark, dreary, cloudy, rainy dismal days. Betty and Carmen down to Dawn’s. I done a dite of cleaning upstairs. Tonight we had some good smelts. Billie got some last night. Kennard called in tonight with his new car. Betty and Dawn brought Carmen home early.



Friday, May 3, 1963

A nice sunny day at last. I finished cleaning Bills room. Betty to town, got the car. She went to town, cashed her check, paid bills. Done the grocery shopping. In evening I babysat at Hansens. Betty to movies with Dawn and Mabel.



Saturday, May 4, 1963  NICE DAY

A very nice warm spring day. Downtown without coats. Another one of those busy days such as Saturday and Sundays are. Just don’t get all the work done up. Fern and Lloyd called, Kennie and Dot, Bob, Timmy came over for the night. Betty and I to town.
Fern up for supper. We had a poor one. Biscuits were like lead. Bill and Betty fixed the chicken coop. Brill plowed the garden, $5.00.

April 27 - 30, 1963 Daylite Savings Time



Saturday, April 27, 1963MIKE CALLED. NO-NO TRANSFER.

Mike called at 9:30 tonight. He can’t get his transfer. He was so down in the dumps about it. He didn’t say much. He was sick, home sick. Betty, Doreen and Larry made a chicken coop. Kids and I to town in p.m. Kids to movie in evening.



Sunday, April 28, 1963

A nice sunny day. A very nice clear day, first one we have seen since about two or three weeks. All sunny and bright all day. We got ready as soon as we could after breakfast and took Doreen and Larry home. Betty, Carmen and me. We took a little extra ride down through Gloucester and Gray, Poland. Got home, got supper. Betty got baby to bed, got the chickens in. Aunt Ava called. Kennie, Dot, Dolores here in p.m. Billie gone smelting. Got the chicks OUT. Alice going to see what can be done about Mike.



Monday, April 29, 1963 Old Daylite Time

Another very nice day. I washed and washed and washed. Today we began that old daylight time I hate it. I have been behind all day. I did a big wash. Mama over to Norway with Blanche and Lori. A big relief for a too short time. I done a lot. Fern and Lloyd called. Betty got ready, went to Dr. Richards about Mike and his transfer. Said he should get it and he would. That makes us feel much better. Betty took Carmen to town. Clothes dried good.



Tuesday, April 30, 1963

Rained all day. I ironed, churned, done the housework. Blanche and Lori called. I made soup. Betty very sick all day. Bill and I to town and got her some penicillin. Linda and I called after supper to see Betty. I took care of Carmen. She was cunning all day.

Tuesday, April 23, 1963

A cloudy, dark, dreary rainy and stormy day. I ironed, done up the work. Made a banana cake. Blanche and Lori called.



Wednesday, April 24, 1963

Sun shining early this morning. Clouded up so we had some cloudy skies. Ground has about two or 3 inches of snow. Betty and I up early to get the car. We had to go over to the garage, Holden Brothers, to have some work done on the car. Blanche and Lori came over and stayed. Nice letter from Mike.



Thursday, April 25, 1963

Another cold mostly cloudy day. I didn’t get any cleaning done today. Billie didn’t work in a.m. Dot and Lorraine called in a.m.



Friday, April 26, 1963

A little more sunshine still on the cold side. I started cleaning the shed chambers. Betty and Carmen to Norway with Julie Conant. In evening Bill and I to town. Betty stayed home, washed the dishes and got ready to go to Auburn for Doreen and Larry. Julie went with her. They all came back here and played poker.

April 19 - 22, 1963 Ran out of gas



Friday, April 19, 1963

Clear in a.m. I cleaned up all the house today. Betty cleaned out the chickens. Betty down after the car, she took Mama to the Cemetery. Dolores went too. Dolores called here a little while. Betty likes the Ford very much. She and I to town after supper and we ran out of gas. I went into Gordon Brill’s and called home.



Saturday, April 20, 1963

Rained in a.m., cleared about 12:30. Had thundershowers. Cleared after that. I got my work done up early in a.m. Billie didn’t have to work again today. Betty and I to town in a.m. to get the license on the new car transferred. Betty to Dr. Richards. He wants her to take some vitamins. Billie raked out back some then went with Lawrence. Bill watched ballgames. Blanche and Lori called. Fern up for supper.

Sunday, April 21, 1963

Fair kind of a day. Kind of warm in a.m. Ken and Delores called. Fern and Lloyd called. Betty to town to get the paper. Billie done a lot of outside cleaning up and took off the storm windows. Betty washed and cleaned the car. Kennie and Dot called. I wrote my letter to Esther after supper. Got windy tonight.



Monday, April 22, 1963

Awful windy. They got cold. I did a big wash. Carmen slept better today. Kennard called. The Berry girls came up, also their mother and other two sisters. Betty made some cookies.
