The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 11 - 14, 1963 Easter Weekend

Thursday, April 11, 1963

A cold cloudy day. Betty and I cleaned her room all through. Also the dark bedroom. We worked till late, made donuts. Expecting Milan’s folks tonight. Billie brought home a very nice ham for Easter.



Friday, April 12, 1963

Good Friday. A very nice day, not quite as cold. Snow was all gone in field on the flats. Snow banks are still left. Milan’s folks here today. I got my work done up early. Betty B. and Norma took Carmen out in the carriage. Snow banks going.



Saturday, April 13, 1963

A beautiful day. Snow about gone. Got housework done up then did some cooking. I churned. Milan, Betty away calling all day. In p.m. Milan, Betty took Mama out for a ride and over to Aunt Ava’s. It did her a lot of good. I’m glad she went. Also it was good for me too. Betty and Norma Gay were down town and over to Norway. Joy over here in evening. Kennard and Delores.



Sunday, April 14, 1963 Easter

A very nice Easter Sunday. Milan’s folks left to go back about 10. Kennie, Dot here in a.m. and Bob. Buddy came today to take Joy and Debbie back with him to Camden, New Jersey. Betty and I called at Lil’s. Fern and Lloyd here for a good baked ham supper.
