The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 1 - 4, 1963



Friday, March 1, 1963

Four below this morning. Clear in first part of the day. Clouded in p.m. Betty and I to town, had our eyes tested. Also done two errands for Billie, sent another film. Blanche came over and stayed with Mama and Carmen. In p.m. Betty and I took Carmen, called at Georgette’s, Linda Knight’s and Aunt Ava’s. Kennard called. Betty got a pretty nightgown and shirt from Barbara. A suit from Carlton and family for Carmen.



Saturday, March 2, 1963 cold

I got my work done up early. Billie had to work in a.m. Bill called to work at 3 AM. He worked till 5 PM. I got my cooking done early, cleaned up the house. Betty cooked and helped to do the work. She cleaned the bird, baby and bathed TooMaine, her cat. Fern up for supper. Also Joy here in evening.



Sunday, March 3, 1963

It got up real warm today. Up as far as 40 above. Sunny all day. Weldon and Lida and girls called. Kennie, Dot, Larry and Doreen. Blanche, Joy and girls called in evening. Benny and Lou called. Betty and I down town to get paper and up over the ridge, called at Lil’s.



Monday, March 4, 1963 20 above

Clear in a.m. Clouded up in PM. I washed. Betty had a headache. Dawn came up today. She went to town with Betty and I as we was already to go. She spent the rest of the day with us. Billie through work at 11 AM to go to town meeting. Carmen slept all morning. Fern and Lloyd called.
