The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 17 - 20, 1984 Poppa Home Again

Thursday, May 17, 1984

A fair day. Not too warm. I finished the radiators. I went to town in PM with Dorothea, lost most of the programs. Betty cleaned her den and bathroom. Milan and Betty called. Milan and Betty and I down to the hospital tonight. Dorothea came too. Bill may be home tomorrow.

Friday, May 18, 1984 Bill home again

A very nice day. I did the windows and did the washing. Bill came home about noon. Milan went and got him. I went down and saw Betty’s house, it looks very good. Bill is much better this time than he was a week ago. I had swordfish for supper and I picked some dandelions. They were so good.

Saturday, May 19, 1984

It started out to be a very nice day then it got quite cloudy, windy. Billie and Zak hauled the dressing out. It got to raining before they got it done. Milan came, also Betty came up. I made rolls, baked some beans. Milan, Betty also Carmen here for supper. I cleaned up the house etc. I was some surprised to see Carmen, but very pleased. She is so depressed, nervous and all upset emotionally. I wish she would give up Alan. He is and what he has done has caused a lot of grief for that family. She don’t know where she is going or what she is going to do. No roof over her head after tonight. I’ll be glad to do anything for her alone. Bill put an electric plug in for the porch today.

Sunday, May 20, 1984

Much warmer today. Kind of hazy yet sunny at times. I done up regular work. Billie and Zak hauled Walt’s manure. Betty and Milan stopped in for a little while. Betty bought us a box of candy, very good. I got lunch. Bill mowed the lawns in PM. Betty’s folks set out the geraniums. I worked at my desk in PM. I suppose Carmen is moving from the shelter today.

May 14 - 16, 1984 Milan and Betty Arrive

Monday, May 14, 1984

A very rainy day two thirds of the day. I ironed, defrosted and cleaned it for the summer, all around inside and out. I did the wash. I watched TV shows in PM. Carmen and Kim got home at about 2 PM. No job. Billie up to David’s. Cleaned out the hens. Betty cleaned her three bedrooms upstairs today.

Tuesday, May 15, 1984

It was quite a nice day. I cleaned a lot of the kitchen cupboards. Betty finished the upstairs. Carmen didn’t have supper at Betty’s tonight, she ate here. We are sick about her taking Alan back. He had gone with another female. He is out of money and he knew he could go back to her for his support. Also to get him out of a jam he is in. I love that girl and it is wicked for her to get in love with such a deranged person. We are also concerned about her and her future.

Wednesday, May 16, 1984 Billie got new mower, Betty and Milan came today

Another mixed bag of weather. On the quite cold side. I done up my regular work. Made two apple pies, cleaned the radiators in the living room. Milan and Betty came about 11 AM. They both were tired. Had a bite to eat, went down and took the things down to Fern’s. Up to Dorothea’s. Then came back. Billie and I went with them down to see Bill at the hospital. He was looking very good and feels quite well. Ilan Smart had a slight stroke this morning. Holly took him to the doctors. We didn’t see Carmen, don’t expect too much anymore. I went down to see Betty’s upstairs. It looks so nice and clean. Billie got a brand-new hand mower.

May 11 -13, 1984 Poppa Really Sick!

Friday, May 11, 1984 Bill home, Bill to hospital

A quite nice day. I did the washing. Washed windows, swept and dusted. We got a call about 12:30, Bill could come home. Betty went and got him. He was very weak and pale. He didn’t do much, was pleased to get home. Gone six days. He seemed quite good, he was lying down most of PM. We had supper about 5:30. He didn’t quite finish. He came in, watched the news. After a while he went out to the kitchen to smoke, went to bathroom, got kind of sick to his stomach. He went to bed and there got very sick and vomited up pure blood hemorrhaged. It was awful. He was very weak. Dorothea happened to call and she got the emergency at hospital. They said to bring him right in. She, Betty and I took him. Billie up to stay with Fern. He was very sick, he was put into INTENSIVE CARE.

Saturday, May 12, 1984

A very heavy steady rain all day. No let up until about 6 PM. David here most all day and talked. I done regular work, made rolls, took bath. Down to hospital in PM. Bill looked bad, the bleeding had stopped. He still had the tube through his nose and in intensive care. I came home, got supper to going. Walt, Betty and family all out together to Lewiston for supper. Carmen went. She rested all day. Fern hired a woman to come work for her today.

May 8 - 10, 1984

Tuesday, May 8, 1984 Bill still having bleeding problems

I cleaned all my silverware. It wasn’t a very pleasant day. No sun, all heavy rain. I cleaned Betty’s silver pieces and all of mine. I got supper to going, made a banana pudding. Watched TV in PM. Billie down to see Bill, he is still bleeding and having more blood. He isn’t doing too good yet. I expect he will pick up soon. Betty and I down after supper. We talked with Dr. Marcia. He said they don’t know what else can be done.

Wednesday, May 9, 1984

A pretty good day after the clouds cleared away. Billie and I down to Betty’s and got some greens. I came home and picked them over. We had them for supper, they was so good. Also I picked some over for Betty’s folks too. Billie down to the hospital. He still isn’t just right. Dorothea went down too. Betty, Carmen and Kim tonight. Police department called Betty again today about Alan’s bouncing checks.

Thursday, May 10, 1984

A quite nice day, on the windy side. I done up my work. Made a lemon pie. I picked some more dandelions. I got a batch ready for Dorothea. I cooked a chicken for supper and had Carmen down for supper. Billie, Dorothea and Betty went to see Bill, he is improved some. May come home tomorrow. Walt got another notice from the bank saying Alan’s April car payment had not been paid. Poor Carmen, she is in such a turmoil all because of what we all see in Alan and hope she will see it before it is too late.

May 5 - 7, 1984 Dawn's Funeral and Senior Prom

Saturday, May 5, 1984 KIM’S SENIOR PROM, DAWN’S FUNERAL IN A.M., BILL BACK TO HOSPITAL

It has been a partly cloudy and sunny day. I got up early and got my work done, breakfast dishes, beds, vacuumed, washed floors, dusted, got ready. Dorothea and I left about 9:30. Dawn looks so nice. She looked very pretty. A big funeral. We got home about 2 PM. Kim was very upset at Dawn’s funeral and many others. It was very sad for us all, we loved her. Bill was taken sick this PM with internal bleeding from the mouth and from the bowels. Very sick, but he felt today better. We called the doctor and they had him brought right into emergency. This afternoon Carmen helped Kim get her hair ready for the prom. It looked very nice. Tonight she and her date, Robbie Robbins, they was a very nice looking couple. I hope they will have a nice (blank).

Sunday, May 6, 1984

A very nice day, sunny and kind of on the mild side. Some wind. Early this forenoon Dorothea, Walt, Betty and Zak all moved Fern up to Dorothea’s for an indefinite stay. She hated to give up her home to go but she likes it up to Dorothea’s, it is so nice and attractive looking. David had a new heifer come today. Kim has been in bed most all day, complete exhaustion. I hope she gets rested. Billie and Zak got the manure spreader up today from Walt’s shed. Walt called today. Betty down to see Bill tonight.
