The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 30 - 31, 1984

Friday, March 30, 1984 Dawn came home, not very good

A partly cloudy day. School bus running one hour late. The wind blowed so awful hard last night and a lot today. I made custard. Bill smoked and read all day. Billie did some shoveling and that was too much. He had to come in and rest. Serious. I went down to Fern’s tonight to say goodbye to Esther. Fern still sick. Dorothea and another lady will work for her from now on. Dawn called here.

Saturday, March 31, 1984 Esther left early for home, Dorothea began work today for Fern

A very nice sunny day. On the cool windy side. Esther left very early this morning for the airport to go home to Florida. Susan and kids took her. She has been such a good helped to Fern and us all. I don’t know how we would have managed without her. I done my regular work. Washed floors, cleaned up, swept, dusted etc. Made bread or rolls. And a cake. Zak up and worked on the puzzle. Kim also, we finished it.

Sickly

Well, this has been quite stormy this month, not a real March weather same as we used to have. Fern fell again and in hospital for second time. Esther came to be with her. Fern was pleased. Fern got sick and went to bed. She has to go to the hospital for x-rays on her knee to see if she can have a joint put in so he can get around. Dawn has been in and out of the hospital, she isn’t at all good, in serious condition. A cancer, she had kidney bag then later on this past month a bowel bag. Dorothea got done at Sid Johnson’s to work for Fern. Esther left for home. Zak in and out of hospital several times, very sick.
