The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 8 - 10, 1984 Chimney Fire

Wednesday, February 8, 1984

Cold this morning. Clear though. Bill to the Dr. but he didn’t come up from Portland so he had to make a new appointment. It was with Dr. Poliner. Billie called on Mrs. Millett today. Also down town. Bill and I went down to Fern’s. She wanted to ask him about her roof.

Thursday, February 9, 1984 BIG CHIMNEY FIRE AT WALT’S. WE MISSED MOST OF IT

On the cool side this morning. I watched the show on TV. Got everything ready and Betty done my shopping and Fern’s. I worked on the puzzle today. Billie out today. Bill didn’t do much. He went out for a little while. Ilan came over and brought something the mailman left over there. Kim stayed after school for meeting (prom). Tonight at Betty’s they had a bad chimney fire. Nothing serious came from it.

Friday, February 10, 1984 TARA came home from hospital

It has been some cloudy and some sun today. I did a big wash, changed the beds. I went to town with Betty. Bill rolled all my pennies. Betty bought the dimes and nickels. Billie bought the quarters. She took me to the bank, I got $45.50 in the savings. I came home, watched the soaps and finished the puzzle. Bill to the hospital to see Dr. Poliner. He checked him all over and said he was in good shape except for the leakage of blood they can’t find.
