The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 30 - June 2, 1971


Sunday, May 30, 1971 PLANTED

Nice and clear in early a.m. and in early p.m. it began to cloud up. I done up regular work. Changed beds and washed sheets and a few things. I planted a few seeds. Bill and Billie planted the garden. I watched them. I called on Esther in p.m. She is better. Betty sick all day. Also Walt not feeling good. Kids all better.



Monday, May 31, 1971

A pretty cloudy day. Some rain showers. Bill and I went down to Gorham and got some strawberry plants. They set them out. Es and Cliff called in evening. Betty got hurt today in the nose and her leg got bruised.



Tuesday, June 1, 1971 Permanent

A nice day. I washed, clothes dried good. I went down to Betty’s. She went to town, shopped etc. Kimmy up here today. I did some ironing. I got a permanent today at Janet Lawrence’s.



Wednesday, June 2, 1971

A very nice day. Kimmy went on her class picnic. She had a very good time, it was up to Brooke Hatch’s on the Ridge. I was down to Betty’s. Betty made Italian sandwiches for supper. Kim brought home a very good report card from school. I done some odds and end jobs. Cleaned rugs in bedrooms etc. I washed windows inside and out.

May 26 - 29, 1971

Another foggy miserable day. Bill worked at Betty’s today. Gordon came up for a little while. I helped Betty do some housework. She took Kim to school. She did some mowing of lawns.



Thursday, May 27, 1971 Zak came home from NCM Hospital

I was home today. I took care of Christopher Rager while Es and sue went to Norway. I did a dite of cooking. Done some odds and end jobs. Kim has cold and has to stay on couch so she can be able to go to the Humpty Dumpty school picnic tomorrow. Betty did some are mowing of lawns.

Friday, May 28, 1971

A partly cloudy day, on the cold side in a.m. Kimmy to school for last day. Humpty Dumpty school. She got a lot out of going to that this past year. She had friends up to play with her in p.m. Mila Dwelley and Bobby McHatten. She was so pleased. Zak still not too good. I was down to Betty’s in forenoon. Bill worked there all day. In evening Betty and Walt went with Billie to get butter. Also Susan went. I stayed with Betty’s kids. Esther stayed with Susan’s. Zak had a hard time getting to sleep. I helped Betty set her dahlias and gladiolus out. She trimmed lawns.



Saturday, May 29, 1971

A beautiful day all day. First nice sunny day we have had for all day long. I done up regular work. Bill down to Walt’s a little while. Walt worked on his closet in utility room. Betty and I over to South Waterford Cemetery. Carmen sick all day. Zak better. Called at Fern’s. Esther sick today.

May 23 - 25, 1971 Zak is Sick


Sunday, May 23, 1971

Mowed lawns. Windy and very cold. I done regular work. Washed, picked over greens I picked. Dorothea and family called. Lloyd called. He said Fern had a bad spell last night. Dorothea and Dave got the refrigerator. Bill and Billie mowed lawns. Betty and kids called. In evening I went down to funeral parlor with Betty to see Joanne. Billie got some chicken breasts.



Monday, May 24, 1971 JoAnne’s funeral

A nice day, sunny. I done a little more wash. Down to Betty’s while she took Kim to school. Her Humpty Dumpty school went by bus to the elementary school today. Betty took Zak to doctors, he has asthmatic bronchitis. He is very bad. Dorothea came up to go to the funeral. I got my hair set today. All went to JoAnne’s funeral in PM. A very big funeral and a lot of flowers. She looked very nice. It is better she has gone after many years of suffering.



Tuesday, May 25, 1971 Zak to the hospital in the night

Another miserable day. I done up regular work. Down to Betty’s to see the kids. Zak sick with asthmatic bronchitis. Kim has a cold. Bill down to Gordon’s and worked all day and part of the night. Cement work. Betty made root beer. In p.m. I got ready to go down to Westbrook to the Westbrook Elementary Spring Concert with Betty. Jeff played in the band. He did very well. It was a very good concert. Came home, Zak’s condition was much worse. They took him to the hospital to be put into a croup tent. Dorothea was so glad we came down. Their house looks so nice.

May 19 - 22, 1971 Joanne Died


Wednesday, May 19, 1971

A nice sunny day, on the cool windy side. I done up work. Down to Betty’s. She mowed lawns for first time. I picked greens. Had a big mess for supper. Susan up to Betty’s for a little while. Bill worked for Gordon. Ilan called in evening. Esther called a minute. Dorothea was on radio trading or selling program, but radio so noisy couldn’t hear her.



Thursday, May 20, 1971

Foggy in a.m. Cleared about 10:30 or 11. I helped Betty today. Bill worked at Gordon’s.



Friday, May 21, 1971

A cloudy raw day. I helped Betty all day. Bill worked at Gordon’s. It began to rain tonight.



Saturday, May 22, 1971 JoAnne

A miserable day, rained all day. I done regular work, cooked today. Esther and Cliff over for supper. Carlton’s girls and Brud’s kids called. Bill took me to town. Dot called about 1:30 today. Joanne died about noon after a long long illness.

Saturday, May 15, 1971 mowed lawns first time

A beautiful day. I done up regular work. Down to Betty’s a little while. Billie to Norway, got garden seed. Lloyd went with him. I washed. Billie and I cleaned cellar and garage. Bill worked at Gordon’s. Esther called. Milan, Betty came from Fryeburg. They left at midnight tonight. Walt worked today. I picked a mess of greens.



Sunday, May 16, 1971

A miserable day. I did regular work. Lida and Weldon called and got the deed to Aunt Ava’s place. I went down town with Betty to take Carmen and Kim down to the show at Lake Region. Fern, Lloyd called. Ilan, Randy called. Bill and Billie worked in the garden. Billie set out dahlias. Walt planted peas. Billie up to Chet’s to work a few hours.



Monday, May 17, 1971

Not a very good day, cloudy and showers. I worked down to Betty’s. Bill worked there in the grain room getting ready for the utility to be built. Betty and I went shopping. Kim to a birthday party, Mila Dwelley.



Tuesday, May 18, 1971 very hot, up in the 70s

A very nice hot day. I rushed around, done my work. Down to Betty’s. We, Fern, Es, Betty and I all got greens (dandelion) and froze them. Bill worked for Gordon. It evening he and I took a ride. I washed today and did a big ironing after supper. Carmen up here for supper tonight.
