The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 23 - 25, 1971 Zak is Sick

Sunday, May 23, 1971

Mowed lawns. Windy and very cold. I done regular work. Washed, picked over greens I picked. Dorothea and family called. Lloyd called. He said Fern had a bad spell last night. Dorothea and Dave got the refrigerator. Bill and Billie mowed lawns. Betty and kids called. In evening I went down to funeral parlor with Betty to see Joanne. Billie got some chicken breasts.

Monday, May 24, 1971 JoAnne’s funeral

A nice day, sunny. I done a little more wash. Down to Betty’s while she took Kim to school. Her Humpty Dumpty school went by bus to the elementary school today. Betty took Zak to doctors, he has asthmatic bronchitis. He is very bad. Dorothea came up to go to the funeral. I got my hair set today. All went to JoAnne’s funeral in PM. A very big funeral and a lot of flowers. She looked very nice. It is better she has gone after many years of suffering.

Tuesday, May 25, 1971 Zak to the hospital in the night

Another miserable day. I done up regular work. Down to Betty’s to see the kids. Zak sick with asthmatic bronchitis. Kim has a cold. Bill down to Gordon’s and worked all day and part of the night. Cement work. Betty made root beer. In p.m. I got ready to go down to Westbrook to the Westbrook Elementary Spring Concert with Betty. Jeff played in the band. He did very well. It was a very good concert. Came home, Zak’s condition was much worse. They took him to the hospital to be put into a croup tent. Dorothea was so glad we came down. Their house looks so nice.
