The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, March 9, 1971

A nice day, Dorothea came up early. She and Betty out looking for family records etc. Up to East Stoneham. I took care of Zak and Kim. I done regular work and ironed.

Zak - the great reader

Wednesday, March 10, 1971

A very nice day. I went down to Betty’s while she took Kim to school. We went for a ride over to Stoneham. They came back, did her grocery shopping. After we picked Kim up, I did some shopping. We called it Susan’s a minute. Came home, Kim stayed up for supper and evening.

Thursday, March 11, 1971

Started in snowing about daylight. Not much came until about noon that it began to snow hard in p.m. In evening we had got about 6 to 8 inches. A bad slippery snow to travel in. Walt home in early afternoon. Bill home for supper and worked rest of the night. In a.m. we, Kennard, Robert, Esther and I all went down to Lane’s to discuss about Aunt Ava’s place etc. I called at Esther’s in evening while the guys went to get haircuts. Billie D over here and stayed all night. Es and I called at Susan little while.

Friday, March 12, 1971 Average snowfall so far 126 inches

A beautiful day after the awful snowstorm of yesterday. Bill worked all night. I done regular work. Robert called. Lloyd, Cliff came and got the rubbish. Cliff, Bob and Kennard shoveled the roofs off at Aunt Ava’s. A lot of snow on them. I worked on scraps. I got all my reading caught up. I washed and ironed. Bill to the dentist and had three teeth out tonight. Esther and family called in evening. Billie took me to town after supper. The bad storm of yesterday broke all records. In 1922 – 23 we had a fall of 125 inches, as of yesterday so far 126 inches 1970 – 71.
