The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

They took Joan (Rayburn’s wife) to hospital last night. Billie took Chet to town to do shopping after supper. I went and did mine too. Bill worked till midnight last night. I went over to Aunt Ava’s with Betty and Fern, we wrapped and packed dishes etc. to move tomorrow. Billie took  Chet and I to town after supper.

A beautiful day. I done regular work. Down to Betty’s. I went over to Aunt Ava’s with them. Billie, Walt and Betty hauled the things home. I came home, washed Billie’s car windows, got supper. Someone called at Betty’s about buying some things.

Another snowstorm. Bill had to work. Billie, Lloyd, David and Jeff all went fishing (smelts) at Bowdoinham on the Kennebec River. Fern came up here and stayed. We looked over old greeting cards of Aunt Ava’s and Uncle Lewis’s. They got home at 1:30 from fishing.

A cold windy day. I done up my regular work. Went down to Betty’s and helped her to make a display of her things she bought at Aunt Ava’s to sell. Esther was there and took care of Zak which was such a big help. She also started Betty supper. I cooked smelts for supper Billie got yesterday. Very good. Bill still sticking to his diet. Cliff took his car to the garage today. We had a bad storm yesterday. Bill worked till 2 AM this morning.
