The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 17 - 20, 1971


Wednesday, March 17, 1971 HENS

Partly cloudy. I done up my work, went down to Betty’s and helped her to get ready for her hens. Dawn called on her this morning. Then we picked up Kimmy, we went down to Westbrook and Betty bought 12 laying hens of Mr. Ricci’s. We called at Dorothea’s and took the iron to her and the milk can she wanted. Es and Cliff over tonight. We counted out the RR passes.



Thursday, March 18, 1971

A nice day. I worked at home today. Called at Betty’s a minute to see the hens. They got two eggs. Kim up today. In evening Esther came over. Bill to bed early, he is lame. Cliff and Billie to the scout meeting.



Friday, March 19, 1971

A nice day until about 2 PM. Then it clouded up. In a.m. Betty took Kim to school, then we went over to Aunt Ava’s and got rest of the things out of the house and shop. Lloyd hauled them home for us. Mrs. Pam Hayward bought rest of Betty’s antiques. Carmen came up after school to stay all night. It began to snow about dusk and it snowed real hard. Zak and Betty came up, she brought up Bill’s Coat of Arms she got for him.



Saturday, March 20, 1971

Partly cloudy after the big storm of last night. Bill home at 7 AM for breakfast after working all night. Back to work until noon. Came home, went to bed. Carmen and I went to town with Esther. They came to plow our yard at about 3 PM.
