The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 14 - 17, 197

Sunday, February 14, 1971

A cloudy dreary dismal day. I took bath, change beds, did regular work. Cleaned the smelts. Bill riding around with the guns and money to see what it is all worth. They got their income taxes ready to go. Hortons are at Fern’s for dinner. Billie brought home a ham from Lawrence. We had birthday cake and ice cream at Betty’s for her birthday. Dorothea and family came and D made the cake.

Monday, February 15, 1971 $4.50

A nice clear day. We worked over to Aunt Ava’s. I did my regular work, washed. Ken, Delores, Betty, Walt, Kim, Zak, Lloyd, Cliff, Robert, Dorothea, Jeff, a friend of Dorotheas and Billie Deming called there today. We sold $9.00 worth of goods.

Tuesday, February 16, 1971

A nice day. Over to Aunt Ava’s, we went there alone except for Lloyd. We arranged things in the living room to sell. It looks very nice. Burt and Howey came up, they bought some things.

Wednesday, February 17, 1971 $3, Betty 28 years, Tom came

A very nice day. We didn’t work at Aunt Ava’s. I was down to Betty’s while she took Kim to school. Dorothea, Jeff, Jerry Pride called at Betty’s. We all went over to Esther’s for lunch in honor of Betty’s birthday. Esther had a very attractive lunch. Delores, Pat, Fern, Susan, Dorothea, Kim, Betty, (guest of honor) and myself. It was all very nice. Came home, had baked beans for supper. Carmen to a birthday party. Tom came tonight unexpectedly.
