The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 1 - 4, 1966



Sunday, May 1, 1966

A nice day. On the cool side. Billie worked for Lawrence. Bill worked for Gordon. Betty, children and I here alone. We visited at the trailer. Aunt Ava called, she and I up to see Evelyn Ridlon. Kennie, Dot called, also Fern and Lloyd. Es called. She had just returned from DOROTHEA and JEFF’S. All are doing well, about eight weeks time, Dorothea should be back home all free and clear.



Monday, May 2, 1966

A beautiful day except awful windy. Betty up, she and I did an awful big wash. Also Betty did the ironing. Billie and I took them home after supper. Bill up to Boston today to the clinic. Billie and I called at Ferns in evening. They have been doing a lot of business today.



Tuesday, May 3, 1966

A sunny day but very cold and windy. I done up my work. Over to Joys. We went down and got Betty. We cleaned some of Joys house. Came home, made pie, got supper. Then we took Betty home. We called at Jeans and at the tenting acres. It began to rain late tonight. Betty sent Mike a downfall letter today. It is all over.



Wednesday, May 4, 1966 TOOTH PULLED

A cold windy day. Joy came after me about 9 AM. I went down to Betty’s. She took me up to the dentist. I had a tooth pulled. Betty and Carmen up here. Mrs. Carter came to see Betty today. Mike got his letter today.

April 27 - 30, 1966 Fern and Lloyd Sold Their Farm



Wednesday, April 27, 1966 Letter from Dorothea.

A beautiful day. I started my cupboards in the kitchen. Betty came up. We got a very pitiful sounding letter from Dorothea. I am so worried about her. I’ll be so glad when that mess is settled and she is out of it. Betty, her girls and I out shopping and over to Norway. Betty got a few things for her and Carmen. She is so pleased with a few new things. Fern, Lloyd up, Bill drove his new car. Nice ride in it, talked houses.



Thursday, April 28, 1966

A cloudy very cold miserable day. Cleaned all the dish cupboards in the kitchen. Joy and girls called. Joy, Buddy and girls got here about 4:30 AM. All are well. Betty and girls here for supper.



Friday, April 29, 1966

Cloudy all forenoon. Cleared some in p.m. I finished my kitchen cupboards. Talk to Betty and Fern, also Delores called. I got a letter off to DOROTHEA. Fern and Lloyd SOLD their FARM today. How happy they are and so many people. At last they will have their new HOME.



Saturday, April 30, 1966

A very nice day. I done up my work. Baked beans, made a cake. Betty and girls came up. Also Fern up for supper. Billie worked at dialectic in a.m., for Chet in p.m.

A very nice day. Betty and Carmen came up with Billie. Had dinner. (?) Dorothea and I to town. Billie worked for dielectric in a.m. Betty, children down town. Got Fern, she came up for supper.




Sunday, April 24, 1966 DOROTHEA CALLED

A cloudy dreary. I went over and cleaned up Bob’s house, came home. Carmen and Betty here. I cooked french fries and scallops for dinner. We got a very unhappy and mixed up call from Dorothea and Dennis. I am worried about her. She wants to come home right now. I’ll be so glad when she is all settled up. Kennie and Dot called.



Monday, April 25, 1966 DOROTHEA

Cloudy most all forenoon. I didn’t wash. I went down to Betty’s, we called Es. She will go and bring Dorothea home if necessary. I came home, cleaned the dining room and kitchen radiator. Also washed the kitchen ceiling. Lawrence came and got his steer and brought a Durham heifer. Dorothea called. She is not coming home now. She wasn’t quite so upset tonight. She is sick over the whole mess. Also I talked with Es. She is going up to Dorothea’s for a few days. Cleared in PM.



Tuesday, April 26, 1966

Windy. A clear day but very cold and windy. I washed. Then I went down to Betty’s and helped her. She is sick. Carmen seems so awfully bored. I came home, got supper, washed dishes, got my clothes in and ironed. Mended. Billie down to help Lawrence Boynton and Butch unload some wild cattle.

Tuesday, April 19, 1966 BILLIE NEW CAR

A beautiful day. I got Es’s letter off. I got my work done up. Betty and the two girls came up. We went down and paid a couple bills. Called at Sally’s to show her the baby. She is so sweet today. Today Billie came home with a brand-new 1966 RAMBLER. Dark blue. He is very pleased with it. We tried it out.



Wednesday, April 20, 1966 Pigs

A cloudy day. I washed a few things, done up the housework. I made a pie. Cleaned the draws in the kitchen. Talked with Betty several times. People at Lloyd’s today to see about buying their place. They want it. Hope they come back for it. Billie got two pigs tonight.



Thursday, April 21, 1966

Cloudy dreary day. I done up my work, wrote four letters. Peg and George, Beat and George, Nan Crook and Lila. Carmen, Betty and Kimberly came up. We talked about Mike most all day. Children were very good. Kennard called a little while. No word from Mike as yet. Last time he saw his family was last Saturday. We wonder.

Done up regular work. Kimberly is a very good baby so far. I went shopping.

A very nice day. I got up early, cleaned up Betty’s house. Kennard came down and got us. We came home, had breakfast. I done up the work here, took a bath. Carmen out a lot today, it is a beautiful day. In evening Bill and I went down to the hospital to see Betty and Kimberly. Mike was there too. He rode downtown with us. Bob hurt his fingers today. Got them bandaged at NCM hospital.



Saturday, April 16, 1966 Kimberly A Boutilier

A beautiful day. Betty and KIMBERLY ALLIE came home from the hospital. Kimberly four days old. Mike got Betty from the hospital. He likes his new baby very much. He didn’t stay with Betty as he had planned. Betty, Carmen, Kimberly and Fern here for supper. Betty? Girls and I done Betty’s grocery shopping. I went down and stayed all night with Betty. She is kind of nervous.



Sunday, April 17, 1966

A very nice sunny day. Betty and I got her work done, gave Kimberly her bath  and had Bill come after us about 10:30. We had breakfast here. Bill and Billie ate too. Bill and Billie raked and cleaned up the lawns. Billie got his fencing done. Betty here all day. Kimberly very good all day. She is a sweet little bunch. Put the clothes line out back today. Fern, Lloyd, Aunt Ava, Kennie and Dot called.



Monday, April 18, 1966 Clothes Out Back



A very nice day. A little on the cool side with a little wind, but nice and clear. I washed, hung clothes out back for the first time. Had smelts for supper Mike gave us. They began on Lloyd’s timber today. Someone came back to look at Lloyd’s house. Also they were there Sunday. Bill and I down to Betty and girls tonight.
