The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 9 - 12, 1966

Sunday, January 9, 1966

A beautiful day, after bad blizzard last night. It started yesterday forenoon. Bill worked all p.m. and all night. Billie shoveled out. I done up my work. Bill worked half-day plowing snow. In evening I wrote my letters. It was very cold. I didn’t get down to see Betty and Carmen. After Mike went they both were home sick.

Monday, January 10, 1966

A nice day, cold in the forenoon. It warmed up and got a little cloudy. I washed down to Betty and Carmen’s. Both are lonesome. Carmen sneezing, Betty didn’t feel very good. I washed my dining room curtains after supper. Bill lame and not too good tonight.

Tuesday, January 11, 1966

Cloudy this a.m. and a few snow flurries. I washed my living room curtains. Made an apple pie and chocolate pudding. I washed all my windows and wood work. Put curtains back. Called at Betty and Carmen’s. Ironed this evening and mended. Colder tonight.

Wednesday, January 12, 1966 Mrs. Carter

A nice clear morning, about 5 below. I done up my regular work. Vacuum, dusted and washed floors. Got ready, went down to Betty and Carmen’s. She had a nice roast pork in cooking. Mrs. Carter came to see her today about aid for she and Carmen from the state. Mike came UGH!!!  Tonight Mike called on her, it was awful. Now what, I don’t know.
