The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 2 - 5, 1966 Carmen's 3rd Birthday



Wednesday, February 2, 1966

Sun shining when I got up this morning. Clouded up about 11 AM. About 7:30 Carmen came with Betty and Mike while Betty took Mike to Auburn. Betty will have the car for a while. $13. Betty got back about 10:30. She, Carmen and I down town. She did her shopping then we went to the dump and came back to check and see where she can park her car. Mike called to see Betty and Carmen last night. Had a lot to talk over etc. $13.



Thursday, February 3, 1966 LETTER DOROTHEA

Partly cloudy. Kennard shoveled the roofs off. I did a dite of mending. Picked over some boxes. Got a much waited for Letter from Dorothea. I’m  much concerned of the outcome of her situation. A very nice letter explaining the details very well. Called at Betty and Ferns in evening.



Friday, February 4, 1966

A nice mild day. Betty, Carmen and I to Norway. We got Carmen some things for her birthday. Came home, had supper. Betty took me to town after supper. Mike called Betty in evening. He got a $15 fine. Will come to get his car tomorrow night. Vince Boynton got hurt today in the woods.



Saturday, February 5, 1966

Nice day 30°. A nice warm day. Had Carmen and Betty up. Had a birthday for Carmen. She got a lot of nice things. Billie gave her a car to ride in. Fern, Lloyd, Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis here. For supper Fern, Bob were here. In evening Fern and I babysat for Betty. She went after Mike. He came over for a little while for her birthday. Billie worked for Lawrence today. Betty, C and I to the dump with rubbish. Mike over to Betty and Carmen’s all-night for tonight.
