The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 22 - 25, 1965



Tuesday, February 22, 1966

Five below this a.m. I done up my work. Billie couldn’t start car, he didn’t go to work. Betty and Carmen came up. It was awful cold here in this house this forenoon. In p.m. Betty, Carmen and I down to the dump with rubbish and down to Betty’s place. Fern and Lloyd called. I done my ironing. Betty did hers here.



Wednesday, February 23, 1966

A beautiful day after a zero temperature at 5:30 AM. The temperature went up to 65 and snow melted. I got my work done up early. Called at Lloyd’s a little while. Fern and I fixed some diapers. I came home. Betty and Carmen called up. We went to Norway, she shopped for some new baby clothes. $15 from Mike. Billie back to work.



Thursday, February 24, 1966

Very mild. Betty and Carmen up here today. Carmen outside, had such a good time. A very nice mild day. We washed the new baby (girl) clothes today. All the lines were full. After supper Delores came up here. She was very hysterical. Had trouble with Kennard. She stayed here all night. She had the doctor. We called Carlton. She is very bad.



Friday, February 25, 1966

Not too cold. It began snowing this a.m., storm increased and got very bad by late p.m. It was a very bad one. Bill worked tonight after supper. Delores went home this a.m. She is very much nervous and upset. Carlton called tonight.
