The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 26 - 29

Saturday, March 26, 1966

A nice sunny day, on the mild side. I done up my work. Called at Betty’s. She and Mike having a good time. Carmen came back with me for supper and into the evening. Fern here also. Betty been expecting to go to hospital all day. Wanted to while Mike was here. She got her state check.

Sunday, March 27, 1966

A cloudy dreary miserable day. Called Betty. She isn’t any worse yet, just the same. She is so happy about Mike being over with them. She still hopes she will have the baby before it is time for Mike to leave. Uncle Lewis going to see Aunt Ava today. Dorothea called today. It was good talking to her.

Monday, March 28, 1966

A very cold and raw windy day. Water pipes frozen at the barn. I washed. Carmen and Betty up. Betty and I to town in p.m. I called to Mr. Lackee’s to see Bill Larrabee. We had a good boiled dinner. Mike called Betty again tonight before he went to work. He cares, why is he the way he is?

Tuesday, March 29, 1966

A beautiful day, still on the cold side. I got my clothes in and ironed. Carmen and Betty up for the day. Betty made cookies. We called at Ferns and Aunt Ava’s after supper. Bill Larrabee’s funeral today. A large funeral. Mike called Betty again tonight. Had a boiled dinner hash. Letter from Dorothea.
