The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 18 - 20, 1976 Easter Sunday

Sunday, April 18, 1976 a very nice hot Easter, Carmen asthma attack, to hospital for treatment

 

It was a very nice hot summerlike day. I changed beds, did a big wash, cleaned up the house, got a Easter dinner. Ham, salad, spinach greens, hot cross buns, lemon sponge and chocolate with cream pie etc. the usual. The Horton family was our guest. Betty and the two kids, Zak and Kim, called on their way home from church to show us their clothes. They both looked so very nice in their new clothes. (Nice-looking kids). Jeffrey and a girlfriend called a little while. We ate dinner outside, it was so nice eating out. Fern and Lloyd came up, we had dessert. Carmen had asthma attack this morning and went down to the hospital for treatment.  In late p.m. another one and went again. ZAK had company tonight, he is so pleased. Vince came over to stay all night with him.

 

 

 

Monday, April 19, 1976 Billie very bad stomach trouble

 

It has been a very nice sunny and mild day. I done a lot of washing. Also did a big big ironing. Bill and I went down to Dorothea’s. Kimmy went with us. We took the towels down Billie gave her. She was very pleased with them. I’ve been very busy all day. Kimmy up here to stay all night because Bill will take her to meeting the bus in the morning to go to the circus. Walt didn’t work, a holiday.

 

 

 

Tuesday, April 20, 1976 Kim to the circus

 

A very nice day, not quite as hot. I cleaned the bureau draws in the bedroom. Also a few other odds and end jobs. Robert called in a.m. Bill took Kimmy down to the elementary school early this morning to meet the bus. The fourth grade went to the Shriner Circus in Portland. She enjoyed it. She got quite tired. Bill worked down in the lower end of the pasture smoothing it off. Billie is a dite better. He suffered a lot past two days. I was late about supper tonight. After supper Betty, Carmen and Kim came up and Esther and I went with them up to Ames. Betty got a lot of things. I got a few things.

April 15 - 17, 1976 Home from the Hospital - Time to party!!

 

Thursday, April 15, 1976 KIM CAME HOME, a nice spring day

 

Today Kim came home from the Northern Memorial Hospital. She is better, but still not fully recovered the Dr. said, also we noticed. She called about 8:30. Betty went for her about 9:30. She was glad to get home. She was quite week after being in bed for several days. Today Betty, Fern and I cleaned Betty’s dining room. Esther took Lloyd and Delores to town then Esther came over to Betty’s. In late p.m. we had steamed franks, salad, p chip etc. at Betty’s then Kim opened her gifts three days after her birthday. She was very pleased with all the gifts. Then we had cake and ice cream. Kim got quite tired, but okay and went to bed about nine. Walt want there, he had to go to a meeting. Bill to Gorham and Standish to get parts for tractor.

Friday, April 16, 1976 Hot

 

I done up the work. Down to Betty’s. We did some bureau draws, closets in her room, she did the cupboards in her living room. We cleaned up her house. I did a big wash for her. Kim worked all day helping. She is the best kid to have around and does everything she is told. Very nice little girl. In p.m. Betty, Kim and I to town. Zak came up here in late p.m. He stayed for supper. This is been a very unusual hot summerlike day.

 

 

 

Saturday, April 17, 1976 Hot, Hauled manure

 

This is been another very hot day. I have been very busy all day. I did a wash. Kim up here, we did some cooking. I cleaned up the house. I was busy all day. Bill and Billie hauled the manure all out today here and down to Walt’s. Used the new tractor. They like it with the loader. Betty worked all day cleaning her barns. She and Kimmy cleaned her play house. Carmen to a pony show with Zenya over to Norway. Zak up here today.

April 12 - 14, 1976 Kim's 10th Birthday

Monday, April 12, 1976 KIMBERLEY ALLIE HORTON 10 YEARS OLD, VERY SICK IN HOSPITAL

 

Kimberley Allie Boutilier Horton is 10 years old today. She is in the Northern Cumberland Memorial hospital very sick. A bad bronchial asthma attack. We are all very worried about her tonight. Betty and Walt down to see her after supper. Blood pressure was high, she had a fast heartbeat. She was much discolored, sick and paid no attention. Later in the evening Dr. Herman called Walt and he said if Kimmy didn’t improve tomorrow he was considering transferring her to Portland MMC. Also still later a medic called who had been in and checked her again said she was much more comfortable and was sleeping. She sure shook us all up today and early evening. This is been a very windy and cold. Only 15 above this morning.

 

 

 

Tuesday, April 13, 1976 Kimmy a little better, nice day

 

Another nice day, not too windy today, which made it warmer outside. I made two chocolate pies. Ironed, done up all my work, down to Betty’s in a.m. In p.m. down to Betty’s until about 2:30 then Bill and I went down to the hospital to see Kimmy. She was a little improved. Not all well, that is for sure and far from it. The nurses were working on her. We came home and then I got supper done up, the dishes etc. and I went down to the hospital again in evening with Betty. Kimmy was more talkative and looked better. Randy over in evening. Betty and I called at Fern’s on the way home.

 

 

 

Wednesday, April 14, 1976 a quite nice spring day

 

I worked at Betty’s. We done all her bureau draws and closets upstairs in p.m., she went to her coffee group meeting in a.m. I washed, ironed and cooked meat for meat pie. Bill worked at the B. Johnson cottage on long Lake. We, Betty, Walt and I called to see Kim in evening at the hospital. She is better and looks like her old self. Expect to come home tomorrow

We, Betty and I went to Fern’s, cleaned her cupboards. Bill to town for me. Betty went to town etc. I was down there this p.m., helped her to get ready for company. Carmen played tennis again tonight after school. Kimmy came up here after supper, going to stay all night. I had fresh dug parsnips and fried smelts for supper, a good feed.

 

 

 

Saturday, April 10, 1976 KIM TO NORTHERN CUMBERLAND HOSPITAL, DEMING’S CAME HOME

 

Kimmy was sick all night and in the early morning hours she got real bad, wheezing hard for her to breath, asthma. Bill went down to tell them about her being sick. Betty called the hospital, they told her to bring her down to emergency which she did. They gave her intravenous fluids, oxygen, medication which made her very sick. Bill and I went down in p.m. She was a little more relaxed Esther and Cliff arrived home at about 1 PM. They were very glad to get home. Susan and the kids were there with Billie to welcome them. Bill and I called a little while. I took a cake, cookies and dozen eggs to them. I have been busy all day, done regular work, made pies, cookies, cake, bread and baked beans. Washed, ironed, cleaned things up, washed floor, down after groceries and up to see Kim. Called at Es. Billie went with Lawrence. Walt’s brother Ray and wife came.

 





 

 

 

 

Sunday, April 11, 1976 Cold

 

This is supposed to be the day for the celebration of Kim’s 10th birthday. Walt’s brother and wife stayed all night last night. Carmen and Ray went over to North Bridgton the play tennis. Walt and Ray called to see Kim. Carmen, Patty and Betty down to see her last night. Kim called me and Betty this morning. She didn’t sound very good and when Walt and Ray were down, she wasn’t as good, getting sick again. It has been very cold and snow flurries. Dorothea and David came up and brought a cake up.
