The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 18 - 20, 1976 Billie and Carmen in Hospitals

Thursday, March 18, 1976 BILLIE CARMEN TO HOSPITAL. sunny, Alton Bean

I got up and got my work done early. Bill and I went to Mechanic Falls where Bill got a setting for a new set of false teeth. We came home. I got a quick lunch and got ready to go with Betty to the Maine Medical Center and to the Osteopathic Hospital with Billie and Carmen. Carmen called from school, she was sick. Betty went and got her. Called the Doctor, he said to bring her right into the hospital. Billie had an appointment to go in. Alton Bean was very low today.

Friday, March 19, 1976 Alton Bean died, Billie operated on

Got up this morning, it was cloudy. It began snowing harder and about 3 or 4 inches of snow came. Then about noon it stopped snowing and the temperatures went up a little. The traveling got better about 1:30. We left for Portland. Billie had been operated on and we know Carmen wanted to see us. Billie want very good. We stayed about an hour with him then over to see Carmen. Dave and Dorothea went out for supper. Last night she went to Boston with David. They had a good time. Alton Bean died this morning. Too bad, he was a young man.

Saturday, March 20, 1976 Billie home, 75 degrees today

Today the snow melted a lot. Been busy all day. Done up my regular work, washed. Washed windows and floors too. About 11:30 Betty and I went to Portland. We went to see Carmen. David has been in and got Billie. He was out to Dorothea’s. Carmen is still having x-ray tests etc. She is getting a little lonesome. She was glad to see us. Betty took some books to her. We came back and picked Billie up. Came home. I ironed, made biscuits, busy till after supper dishes were all done. Jeannie Brill called for flowers for Alton Bean. Billie is sore but doing okay. Glad to be home, got to be careful.
