The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 21 - 24, 1976

Sunday, March 21, 1976

Cloudy, foggy and rain showers most of the day. In early a.m. it was partly cloudy and sunny. I washed a few things, done my regular work. Made a couple pies. Kim came up in p.m. until about eight. I was down to Betty’s while they went to see Carmen. Also they saw Ed, called there a little while. He is not at all good. I got supper after he got home. Billie is about the same.

I was very busy all day. I did some washing, I did some ironing. Busy all day. Kimmy came up after school, she made Billie’s birthday cake. Then in evening the Horton’s all but Carmen came up for ice cream and cake. Billie got $55 in money and other things, many nice cards.

I have been busy all day. Betty down to see Carmen, nothing yet on her condition. Got to take more x-rays etc. I went down and done up Betty’s work. Brought home a small roast of pork and cooked in for her supper. I did my ironing and hers. She didn’t get home until about 4:45. Poor Carmen. She is so lonesome. I’ll be glad when they know what her problem is so they can get her on the road to recovery and she gets home.
