The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 12 - 15, 1976

Monday, January 12, 1976 snow, 12° below

It snowed a lot last night. It was windy and drifting. And 22 below when we got up. It cleared off some during the day. I was down to Betty’s a little while. I done up my regular work. In evening Betty and I went down to the hospital. Bill is improving. Dorothea was there. She came back with us. Walt plowed driveways is p.m.

Tuesday, January 13, 1976

A very nice day, but very cold. I done my regular work. Betty came up. We picked the boxes over downstairs and got them taken care of. In evening we went to the hospital. In p.m. Betty and I called at Delores’s and got Bill’s pajamas.

Wednesday, January 14, 1976 No School

A big storm. When we got up it was storming. It cleared about 8 o’clock. Some floating clouds. Then got a little milder. There was not any school, very bad traveling. Zak came up here, he was very good and he had a good time. Walt plowed late this p.m. Betty went down to see Bill. She and Kimmy.

Thursday, January 15, 1976 BILL CAME HOME

Nice and sunny. Not too cold. I done up my work. Went down to Betty’s to do my washing. The man didn’t come to fix the machine. Betty took Chet up to North Waterford to a boarding place. He likes it. She went to the hospital and got Bill. Betty, Carmen and I went to Portland to do Carmen’s birthday shopping in p.m. No school this p.m. We didn’t get home until about 6:45. Fern stayed with Zak. Kimmy was up here.
